Shockwave: Nigeria Rocked by Outrage Over Ozoro Festival Sexual Assault

The nation was gripped by disturbing scenes last week as videos from a cultural festival in Ozoro, Delta State, circulated online, showing women being chased, harassed, and allegedly assaulted in public. What began as a local celebration quickly escalated into a national outcry, sparking widespread condemnation from police, rights groups, legal bodies, and prominent figures, all demanding justice and asserting that no tradition justifies actions endangering women.
The footage, shared extensively across social media, depicted chaos during a cultural gathering in Oramudu Quarters. Eyewitness accounts and videos showed young women and girls being chased, harassed, and having their clothes torn, with some even groped in an unacceptable manner. Allegations of sexual assault and molestation, particularly targeting students of Southern Delta University, Ozoro, fueled anger and deep concern about the safety of women in public spaces.
The festival, known as 'Alue Do,' is traditionally regarded as a fertility festival with symbolic practices aimed at bringing blessings to married couples struggling to conceive. Some community residents and leaders, including the Ozoro Kingdom leadership and Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, strongly condemned the violence while clarifying that the original purpose of the festival was misunderstood or hijacked by criminal elements. They vehemently denied claims of a 'rape festival,' insisting that their culture is rooted in peace and respect for human dignity. However, while denying rape incidents, the Ozoro Kingdom leadership acknowledged that some youths misinterpreted and misapplied the cultural practice in a negative and unacceptable manner, leading to the harassment of young women. It was also noted that some stakeholders had previously warned women to remain indoors on the festival date to avoid molestation.
The Delta State Police Command responded swiftly, launching an immediate investigation. Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, condemned the alleged assaults as 'criminal, inhumane, and a grave violation of fundamental rights.' Chief Omorede Sunday, identified as the chief organiser, was arrested along with four other suspects initially, with an additional eleven suspects later apprehended, bringing the total to 15. The case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further action.
Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, representing Delta South, described the incident as 'criminal, barbaric, and an egregious violation of human dignity,' urging thorough investigation and stricter measures for future events. The Delta State Government, through Commissioner for Information Charles Aniagwu, also described the incident as 'barbaric, heinous, and unacceptable.'
The Wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, expressed strong condemnation after watching the 'horrific viral footage,' calling the physical and sexual assault 'degrading, barbaric, and a violation of the dignity of the female gender.' She applauded police arrests and urged perpetrators to face the full weight of the law, advising victims to seek medical and psychological help.
Advocacy groups quickly weighed in, framing the incident within the broader context of gender-based violence in Nigeria. The Women's Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) highlighted how harmful practices thrive where silence and social pressure deter victims from speaking out. ActionAid Nigeria demanded accountability, swift prosecution, and comprehensive support for survivors, urging Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to demonstrate visible leadership. A coalition of over 500 women's rights organisations under Womanifesto denounced the acts as 'organised and institutionalised abuse' and a violation of constitutional rights, emphasizing that 'This is not our culture. This is organised and institutionalised abuse, and it must be treated as a crime.' The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) labeled it a 'national disgrace' and 'barbarity,' not culture, stressing that such acts constitute serious criminal offenses and demanding accountability for both perpetrators and enablers. The Students Union Government (SUG) President of Southern Delta University, Precious Augustine, unequivocally condemned the acts as 'criminal, barbaric and evil,' stating, 'Rape is not culture, harassment is not tradition, violence against women will never be justified.'
The events in Ozoro have reignited a critical national conversation about the intersection of culture, tradition, and women's rights in Nigeria. Experts and rights advocates emphasized that culture is not static and must evolve to reflect modern standards of safety and human rights. While Nigeria has legislation like the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, enforcement remains a challenge, particularly in rural areas. Calls have intensified for strict enforcement of existing laws, the abolition of harmful cultural practices, the establishment of safe houses and crisis centers for victims, and coordinated support services. The incident serves as a stark reminder and a test of how communities balance respect for heritage with the fundamental responsibility to protect human dignity. The overarching message is clear: culture should celebrate life, not endanger it; tradition should unite, not divide; and festivals should evoke joy, not fear.
