Shockwave in Southern Kaduna: PDP Official Jumps Ship to APC

Hon. Dan Amos, the federal lawmaker representing Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His decision, announced yesterday at a press conference in Kafanchan, was driven by the perceived necessity of aligning with both state and federal governments to foster development within Southern Kaduna. This move is significant, marking a major realignment in Kaduna’s political dynamics and signaling the end of over 25 years of PDP dominance in the state's southern region.
Amos revealed that his defection followed extensive consultations with various stakeholders across his constituency, including community leaders, faith-based organizations, professionals, and traditional institutions. He explained that the PDP, once a dominant political force in Kaduna, has been weakened by “prolonged internal crises,” leading to substantial defections and a national loss of grassroots appeal. The collective decision from his constituents was to seek an alternative platform that could better serve their interests, ultimately leading to identification with the APC.
The lawmaker particularly highlighted the visible commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani towards the inclusion and development of Southern Kaduna as key factors in his decision. He lauded President Tinubu for appointing General Christopher Musa, a local indigene, as Chief of Defence Staff, and for approving crucial federal projects like the Federal University of Applied Sciences and the Federal Medical Centre in the region. Governor Uba Sani was also commended for his “inclusive governance style, infrastructural expansion, and open-door policy,” which Amos believes has fostered unity and a sense of belonging throughout the state.
Dismissing suggestions of personal political gain, Amos described his defection as a “divine decision” influenced by conviction and the collective interest of Southern Kaduna. He emphasized that the move was about positioning the region to benefit from the dividends of democracy, asserting his belief that history would view this bold step favorably. As chairman of the House Committee on Services, he assured his constituents that his commitment to service delivery would remain strong, stating that he intended to “add value” to the ruling party, not displace anyone.
Amos expressed optimism that ongoing collaboration between the people and the government would continue to attract development in infrastructure, education, and security to Southern Kaduna. A formal reception for Amos, Senator Sunday Marshall Katung (who is also expected to defect today), and other PDP defectors is scheduled for today in Kafanchan. The event is anticipated to be a high-profile affair, with Vice President Kashim Shettima, Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and other key APC leaders from across the country expected to attend.
