Shocking Twist: CCTV Footage Reveals Fatal Ramming in Jirongo's Death, DCI Widens Probe

Former Cabinet Minister and Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo tragically died in a fatal road crash last week. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has initiated a comprehensive probe into his death, investigating it as a potential outcome of dangerous driving by the bus driver involved. DCI's homicide and forensics experts are actively working on the case, having collected important exhibits from the scene of the incident and pursuing various leads.

According to detectives, CCTV footage provides a crucial timeline of the events. The footage indicates that Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz was struck by a Climax passenger bus as he exited the Eagol Petrol Station in the Karai area, situated along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway, on Saturday, December 13. The sequence of events captured by the CCTV is precise: at 02:18:40 A.M., the deceased drove into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction but did not fuel. He then stopped at the station's exit at 02:19:10 AM, and by 02:19:19 A.M., he made a right turn, driving back towards Nairobi. At 02:19:25 A.M., the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) bus was captured ramming into Jirongo's vehicle.

The impact was significant, pushing Jirongo’s vehicle 25 meters away from the point of collision. The bus, however, continued its journey for another 50 meters before coming to a stop. The driver of the bus, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, was identified and taken in for statement recording. He was subsequently released on cash bail, pending further investigations into the offense of causing death by dangerous driving. Kamau is required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, for additional police action. Speaking to journalists after recording his statement, Kamau stated that he was faced with a difficult choice between saving Jirongo and the 65 passengers on board his bus.

As part of the ongoing investigations, a fuel attendant and the night guard at the petrol station where the incident occurred have also been interrogated. Furthermore, friends and associates who accompanied Jirongo at the Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi just hours before the fatal accident are expected to record statements. Passengers from the ill-fated bus, along with any other witnesses, are also considered vital for providing information to the authorities. Jirongo was reported to have attended a social event shortly before the crash and had another meeting scheduled for the fateful day.
