Netflix has abruptly cancelled Kurt Sutter’s Western drama, The Abandons, after just one season, marking another instance of the streamer moving away from high-budget productions. The decision comes despite the series logging over 100 million streaming hours and expanding Sutter’s established universe of complex characters and narratives.
A Fresh Take on the American West
Unlike Sutter’s male-centered shows, Sons of Anarchy and Mayans M.C., The Abandons centered on two formidable matriarchs in the 1850s Washington Territory. Gillian Anderson starred as Constance Van Ness, a wealthy matriarch seeking to expand her land, clashing with Fiona Nolan (Lena Headey), a widowed Irish immigrant who raises a family of orphans while protecting her land.
Tensions quickly escalated when Fiona’s adopted daughter Dahlia (Diana Silvers) clashed with Constance’s son Willem (Toby Hemingway), resulting in his death at the hands of the Nolan family—a pivotal act that set the stage for a brewing conflict. The series stood out by highlighting underrepresented characters and portraying ‘messy women’ with depth, a hallmark of Sutter’s storytelling.
Behind the Scenes and Cancellation
Despite its immersive story, The Abandons faced production challenges. The show exceeded budget expectations, received mixed critical reviews, and suffered from Kurt Sutter’s departure before production concluded, reportedly over creative differences—a recurring issue in his past projects.
Although the series remained in Netflix’s Top 10 for several weeks and incorporated Sons of Anarchy alumni Ryan Hurst and Michael Ornstein, it ultimately fell victim to Netflix’s reputation for cutting expensive shows prematurely, even those with strong potential to capture audiences amid the upcoming conclusion of flagship series like Stranger Things.
