Shocking Crime: Galamsey Operator Remanded for Wife's Vicious Murder!

Nicholas Gyekyey, a 22-year-old galamsey operator known as “Town Boy,” has been remanded into police custody by the District Magistrate Court in Enchi on charges of allegedly murdering his 18-year-old wife, Erica Ocansey. Gyekyey's plea has not yet been taken, and he is scheduled to reappear before the court on Monday, March 2, 2026.
Police Detective Chief Inspector Joseph Kwadwo Agyare, the prosecutor, informed the court, presided over by Mr. Lawrence Buanor-Buer, that Gyekyey and the deceased were residents of Takyikrom near Achimfo in the Aowin municipality. The couple shared a four-month-old baby, and Erica Ocansey resided with her mother-in-law.
The tragic incident occurred on February 13, 2026, at approximately 9:00 PM. According to the prosecution, the deceased went to her father-in-law’s residence, where Gyekyey lived with his brothers. An argument erupted between the couple after Ocansey demanded money from Gyekyey.
Gyekyey reportedly told his wife he did not have the full amount she was requesting but could offer a small sum from his mobile money (Momo) account for the time being. Ocansey, who was aware of Gyekyey’s previous Personal Identification Number (PIN), took his mobile phone and attempted to access his MTN Momo account. However, she was unaware that Gyekyey had changed his PIN, resulting in the account being blocked.
This act allegedly enraged Gyekyey, who, appearing to be under a spell, violently assaulted Ocansey. He then retrieved a stone and repeatedly smashed it on her head. A neighbor witnessed the horrific act and raised an alarm, causing Gyekyey to flee the scene upon noticing the neighbor's presence.
The deceased was immediately rushed to the Achimfo Clinic and subsequently referred to the Enchi Government Hospital. Tragically, Erica Ocansey died en route to the hospital. Police arrested Gyekyey on February 14, 2026, around 4:30 AM, while he was heading towards Achimfo, and he was subsequently handed over to the police authorities.
