Shocking Comeback: Tom Hanks' Biggest Flop Revived by 'The Batman' Director!

Tom Wolfe's iconic 1980s literary hit, "The Bonfire of the Vanities," which later became one of the most infamous cinematic failures of the 1990s, is now being adapted into a miniseries for AppleTV. This blockbuster satire of 1980s Wall Street excesses is being spearheaded by prolific TV hitmaker David E. Kelley, known for successful streaming series like "Goliath," "Big Little Lies," "Nine Perfect Strangers," and "The Lincoln Lawyer." Kelley's next Apple series, "Margo's Got Money Troubles," is set to premiere soon, and he has previously adapted another of Wolfe's works, the 1996 novel "A Man in Full," which premiered as a miniseries on Netflix in 2024.
Adding significant weight to the project, Matt Reeves is reportedly set to direct the series. This marks Reeves' first television directorial assignment since his cinematic breakthrough with "Cloverfield." Currently, Reeves is engaged in writing and directing the much-anticipated "The Batman: Part II," slated to begin filming this spring for an October 1, 2027 release.
The original book, first serialized in Rolling Stone before its novel publication in 1987, centers on Sherman McCoy, a highly successful Wall Street trader living an opulent life with his wife and mistress. A fateful wrong turn into a precarious neighborhood one night, while with his mistress, leads to an accidental hit-and-run incident. This single event spirals into a city-wide uproar, propelling McCoy into the spotlight as the defendant in what becomes widely known as the trial of the century.
Upon its release, the book garnered immense success with both readers and critics, leading many to believe a film adaptation was destined for box office triumph. The 1990 film, directed by Brian De Palma—fresh off the success of "The Untouchables"—featured a star-studded cast including Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, and Morgan Freeman. However, contrary to expectations, the film proved to be a critical and commercial bust. Its tumultuous production was famously chronicled by journalist Julie Salamon in her book "The Devil's Candy," an "autopsy of the film's failings," despite Warner Bros. granting her unprecedented access in anticipation of a hit.
Tom Wolfe, the author behind "The Bonfire of the Vanities," was a pioneer of "New Journalism," a style that integrated literary techniques into journalistic reporting. His other notable works include "The Right Stuff" and "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test." Wolfe passed away at the age of 88 in 2018. The miniseries adaptation of "The Bonfire of the Vanities" is currently in development at AppleTV, with further updates expected.
