Shocking Accusation: Mum Reveals Truth Behind Baby's Different Skin Color

Belvana Abeli, a mother residing in Cape Town, South Africa, has candidly revealed the profound challenges she encountered after her daughter, Zayana Domingos, was born with albinism. Zayana, now two years old, possesses distinctly light skin, hair, and eyes, which stands in stark contrast to her parents and two siblings, all of whom are black. This striking visual difference frequently led to intrusive questioning from strangers, who often accused Belvana of infidelity or inquired if Zayana was adopted. Belvana described these interactions as "offensive," though she acknowledged that people might unconsciously pose such questions due to a lack of understanding.

Belvana's journey with Zayana began unexpectedly during her pregnancy when she contracted Covid-19, which necessitated an emergency C-section at just 28 weeks. Upon Zayana's birth, Belvana was initially perplexed by her newborn's unique skin tone and ginger hair. While doctors initially suggested that Zayana's skin and hair color would darken over time, subsequent genetic testing performed after a few days in the hospital confirmed that Zayana had albinism, a lifelong genetic condition. This diagnosis came as a surprise to the family, as they were initially unaware of any prior history of albinism on either side. However, further investigation by Belvana revealed that her grandmother’s great-uncle had also lived with albinism and endured similar societal discrimination, indicating a familial link previously unknown.
Zayana is the middle child of three; her older sister, Zivah, is five, and her younger brother, Zander, is five months old, both of whom are black. The family's experience sheds light on the broader implications of albinism, which commonly involves visual impairment due to a reduced amount of melanin in the eyes, as well as an increased susceptibility to sunburn and skin cancer. When Belvana became pregnant with her third child, she consulted doctors about the possibility of genetic testing to determine if her unborn baby would also have albinism. While she expressed no personal preference regarding the outcome, she wished to minimize any potential shock for the family.

Despite the inherent challenges, Belvana lovingly refers to Zayana as her "miracle baby" and views her birth as a profound blessing. She emphasized that raising an albino child has presented difficulties, largely stemming from public misunderstanding and a pervasive lack of education about albinism. This included receiving misguided advice that Zayana would require a special school because albinism was inaccurately perceived as a disability. Conversely, these unique experiences have empowered the family to share their story, fostering greater awareness and knowledge about albinism within their community and beyond, turning personal challenge into public education.
The family continues to navigate these unique circumstances with resilience. Zivah, the eldest daughter, has begun to notice and question why Zayana looks different from the rest of the family. While Zayana is currently too young to voice such questions herself, Belvana anticipates these inquiries as her daughter grows older and becomes more aware. Through all the societal misconceptions and personal hurdles, the family remains deeply grateful for Zayana, embracing her as a cherished and integral part of their lives, embodying a powerful message of love and acceptance.
