Shinedown Extends Reign: 'Killing Fields' Sets New Mainstream Rock Airplay Record!

Shinedown has significantly extended its lead on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, achieving its 21st No. 1 with the song “Killing Fields” on the ranking dated September 20. This accomplishment places the Brent Smith-led band two chart-toppers ahead of its closest competitor, Three Days Grace, since the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart’s inception in 1981. This marks Shinedown’s first No. 1 since “Dance, Kid, Dance” led the chart for a week in March, and their inaugural chart-topper dates back to 2005 with “Save Me.”
A detailed look at the artists with the most No. 1s on Mainstream Rock Airplay reveals Shinedown at the top with 21, followed by Three Days Grace with 19, Five Finger Death Punch with 16, and both Foo Fighters and Metallica tied at 14. Disturbed, Godsmack, Linkin Park, and Van Halen each hold 13 No. 1s.
Beyond its dominance on Mainstream Rock Airplay, “Killing Fields” is also performing well across other rock formats. The song currently stands at No. 11 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, garnering 2.8 million audience impressions in the week ending September 11, marking a 5% increase. Its peak on this list so far was No. 6 in the preceding week. The track also spent a week on Alternative Airplay, reaching No. 39 on September 13, and climbed to No. 14 on the multimetric Hot Hard Rock Songs chart in August, currently ranking at No. 23 on the most recently published chart.
In addition to its significant radio airplay, “Killing Fields” accumulated 391,000 official U.S. streams between August 29 and September 4. The song is presently released as a standalone single. Shinedown’s most recent full-length album, “Planet Zero,” debuted at No. 1 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart in 2022 and has since achieved 415,000 equivalent album units.
