Shettima Attends Inauguration of Gabon President

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, joined other world leaders and Gabonese citizens for the inauguration of Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema as President of Gabon. This event followed Nguema's election victory on April 12, 2025, where he won against seven other candidates. Nguema had previously served as interim president for 20 months after a change in government that ousted former President Ali Bongo.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Stade de l’Amitié sino-gabonaise in Libreville, featured military parades, a march past, and displays of Gabon’s cultural heritage. In his inaugural address, President Nguema expressed gratitude to the Gabonese people for their support, which led to his democratic election. He committed to working towards Gabon’s development and empowering the youth to secure the nation's future.
President Nguema also pledged to address insecurity, criminality, and the lack of adequate water supply in the country. He acknowledged the role of the United Nations and promised to collaborate with them, while also advocating for peaceful coexistence among African nations.
In addition to Vice President Shettima, numerous heads of state attended the inauguration, including President Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, John Dramani Mahama of Ghana, Faustin-Archange Touadéra of the Central African Republic, Adama Barrow of The Gambia, Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, and Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno of Chad. Other attendees included Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo, Ismaïl Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, and Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi.
Vice President Shettima was accompanied on the trip by Hon Usman Bello Kumo, Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, and Dr. Aliyu Modibbo, Special Adviser to the President on General Duties (Office of the Vice President). He has since returned to Abuja.
