Today’s deep dive continues our special series celebrating women in business.

In this edition, we turn our attention to one such woman—Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu, an Ethiopian entrepreneur whose vision transformed traditional craftsmanship into a globally recognized footwear brand.
She is known for her innovative approach to manufacturing and ethical entrepreneurship, she built a globally respected footwear brand rooted in Ethiopian craftsmanship.
Early Life and Education
Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu was born and raised in Addis Ababa, specifically in the Zenabwork area, a working-class community on the outskirts of the city.
Growing up, she witnessed the economic struggles faced by many families in her neighborhood. Despite their skills and craftsmanship, many artisans lacked access to stable employment opportunities.
Determined to chart a different path, Alemu pursued higher education and earned a degree in Accounting from Unity University. However, beyond academics, Alemu was deeply motivated by the desire to create opportunities for people in her community.
The Journey into Entrepreneurship
After graduating, Alemu decided to start a business that could both create jobs and showcase Ethiopian craftsmanship to the world. In 2005, she founded soleRebels, a footwear company based in Ethiopia.
Her idea was inspired by “selate,” traditional Ethiopian sandals historically made from recycled car tires. By combining this traditional technique with modern design and environmentally conscious production methods, she created footwear that was both stylish and sustainable.
Starting with a small team of artisans from her community, Alemu built the company around ethical values—fair wages, safe working conditions, and environmentally friendly materials.
Building a Global Brand
Under Alemu’s leadership, soleRebels grew from a small workshop into a globally recognized footwear brand. The company’s products are now sold in numerous countries through retail stores and international distribution networks.
