Shailene Woodley Reveals Devastating 'Paradise' Scene with Sterling K. Brown

The sci-fi series "Paradise" Season 2 has delivered significant emotional impact, particularly in Episode 4, which contains major spoilers. Former Secret Service agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) finds himself in a desperate situation after a plane crash, dealing with a reaggravated knee injury and the urgent need to reach Atlanta to reunite with his wife, Teri. He eventually forms an alliance with Annie Clay (Shailene Woodley), a former Graceland tour guide and med student who initially has her own conditions for helping him.

Initially, Annie insists Xavier go along with her plan to reunite with Link (Thomas Doherty) in Colorado, but then relents, and the two start trekking to Atlanta. Tragically, Annie goes into labor, gives birth to a baby girl, and dies in Xavier's arms, entrusting him with a "holy charge": to get her daughter to Colorado so she can reunite with a father who doesn't even know she exists.

Collider had the opportunity to speak with the show's new and returning cast about some of the most pivotal moments in Season 2's initial episodes, including Shailene Woodley and Thomas Doherty. Woodley, whose character Annie anchors the first episode of Season 2, shared that she felt no pressure despite the significant role. Having been cast and on set within seven days, she dedicated her time to understanding Annie, her relationship with Link, and with Sterling. Woodley described the experience as creating "something so wildly different" from Season 1, akin to a "short film in and of itself."

Delving into Annie and Link's brief yet intense romance, both Woodley and Doherty debated whether their connection was destiny or circumstantial bonding. They leaned towards the idea of destiny, noting how the dire circumstances intensified their bond. Doherty explained that after three years on the run, both characters had built emotional walls and protective mechanisms that compromised their humanity. Upon meeting, those fell away, revealing a "pure love." Woodley highlighted the importance of incorporating laughter and playfulness into their tender scenes, suggesting that in extreme survival situations, joy, ecstasy, silliness, and relief are as crucial as grief and fear, adding a human element to their vulnerability.

Woodley also discussed the heartbreaking "holy charge" scene where Annie dies. She described it as an intensely emotional experience, amplified by the deep care and trust she developed with Sterling K. Brown. The scene involved a multitude of emotions: the pain and joy of childbirth, coupled with the profound understanding of life ending and a new life beginning. Woodley emphasized the spiritual and universal nature of the "holy charge," interpreting it as a reflection of "Paradise's" broader themes about human purpose and how one chooses to live, regardless of life's brevity. This message, that "life is long until it's not, and what we do with that is a daily choice," was a key factor in those scenes.

Regarding Thomas Doherty's character, Link, many questions remain, including mysterious flashbacks and Xavier's inexplicable recognition of him. Doherty remained secretive about Link's ultimate agenda and the reason behind Xavier's past encounter with him, promising a "jaw-dropping" revelation for fans. New episodes of "Paradise" Season 2 premiere Mondays on Hulu.
