Scorsese and DiCaprio Prepare for Another Psychological Descent as “What Happens at Night” Nears Production

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are preparing to collaborate once again, with production on What Happens at Night expected to begin in February 2026. The project has already stirred industry interest, not only because it reunites two of Hollywood’s most enduring creative partners, but because it hints at a return to the darker psychological territory that has defined some of their most celebrated work. Over the years, Scorsese’s filmmaking style, widely chronicled through his career at Martin Scorsese, has consistently explored obsession, morality, and human contradiction.
The announcement followed a recent public appearance in New York where Scorsese and DiCaprio reflected on their long professional relationship and the evolution of their collaborations. Together, they have delivered films that sparked debate, admiration, and box-office success, from historical epics to modern crime sagas. Their most recent outing, Killers of the Flower Moon, reinforced that creative legacy, earning ten Academy Award nominations and reaffirming DiCaprio’s status as one of the most versatile actors of his generation, a reputation long associated with his career at Leonardo DiCaprio.
What Happens at Night is adapted from Peter Cameron’s novel, with a screenplay written by Patrick Marber. The story follows a married American couple who travel to a remote, snow-covered European town to adopt a baby, only to find themselves isolated in a nearly empty hotel populated by unsettling figures. As administrative delays mount and tensions rise, the couple begins to confront uncomfortable truths about themselves and their relationship, pushing the narrative toward psychological unravelling rather than conventional suspense.
Jennifer Lawrence is set to star opposite DiCaprio, completing a formidable trio led by Scorsese. Lawrence’s recent performances have leaned heavily into emotionally complex material, making her a fitting presence for a film rooted in unease and moral uncertainty. The project’s tone has already drawn comparisons to Shutter Island, a previous Scorsese–DiCaprio collaboration often cited among the director’s most psychologically intense works, alongside titles such as Killers of the Flower Moon detailed at Killers of the Flower Moon.
While further casting details remain under wraps, expectations are high that familiar faces from Scorsese’s creative circle may appear in supporting roles. No official release date has yet been announced, but anticipation continues to build as the film edges closer to production. For fans and industry observers alike, What Happens at Night is shaping up to be another slow-burning study of character and consequence, driven by a partnership that has repeatedly proven its endurance.
