Ryan Gosling's 'Project Hail Mary' Blasts Off at Box Office, Shattering Records

On a recent episode of the “Daily Variety” podcast, the Box Office segment highlighted significant developments in the film industry, focusing on Amazon MGM Studios' triumph with “Project Hail Mary” and the burgeoning influence of Artificial Intelligence in Asian cinema discussed at Hong Kong Filmart.
Amazon MGM Studios scored a massive box office success with its Ryan Gosling fantasy vehicle “Project Hail Mary,” which recorded a stellar $80.5 million domestic opening and $60.4 million from 82 international markets, culminating in a global debut of $140.9 million. This performance represents the best opening of the year, surpassing “Scream 7” ($63 million domestic and $97.2 million worldwide), and Amazon MGM’s biggest opening ever, eclipsing “Creed III” ($58 million domestic and $100.4 million worldwide). This crucial win comes at a time when Amazon MGM desperately needed to deliver a blockbuster, having struggled to establish a consistent theatrical strategy since acquiring MGM for $8 billion in 2022. The film’s success points the company toward a more populist, popcorn-friendly direction, especially as it prepares for its first full theatrical slate of 13 films in 2026.
“Project Hail Mary,” adapted from “The Martian” author Andy Weir’s best-selling novel, was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and cost $200 million to produce. It follows a scientist, played by Ryan Gosling, embarking on an intergalactic mission to save Earth from extinction. The film garnered excellent reviews, holding a 95% average on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” grade on CinemaScore exit polls, with distribution chief Kevin Wilson noting the audience energy and word-of-mouth. Industry analysts like David A. Gross emphasized the film's successful balance of science fiction and humanity, echoing the appeal of Weir's previous work. The movie was initially set in motion for MGM by former film chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, now at Warner Bros. Pictures, who were credited with making MGM more attractive to a buyer.
Audiences for “Project Hail Mary” were predominantly male (57%) and white (60%). A significant portion of ticket sales, approximately 55%, came from premium large formats (PLF) such as Imax and Dolby screens, underscoring the importance of enhanced theatrical experiences for event-level films. Imax CEO Rich Gelfond highlighted the enduring connection between Imax and space-themed movies, praising the film’s stunning depiction of the cosmos. The film is expected to dominate the box office until Universal and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” arrives on April 1.
The path to this success for Amazon MGM has been rocky, with previous theatrical forays underperforming. January’s documentary “Melania” generated $16 million against a $40 million budget, and February’s R-rated caper “Crime 101” grossed $65 million against a $90 million budget. The studio's next major release is June’s toy adaptation “Masters of the Universe,” which aims to build on “Project Hail Mary’s” momentum.
Meanwhile, Variety's Naman Ramachandran reported from Hong Kong Filmart, where AI and China were dominant topics among top Asian producers, distributors, and talent. In stark contrast to the hesitancy observed in the U.S. creative community, there is a strong zeal in Asia to employ new content creation tools. Ramachandran noted that full-length features are already being produced with AI, citing a Korean project called “Raphael,” an 80-minute film set in Europe slated for a theatrical release in Korea in May. AI is also prevalent in microdramas, where it serves as a test tool for creating two or three-minute segments. If these segments resonate with audiences, the rest of the episodes are then shot with human actors.
In other box office news, Disney and Searchlight’s horror sequel “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” opened in fourth place with $9 million domestically and $2.8 million internationally, for a global launch of $11.9 million against a nearly $20 million budget. Disney’s Pixar adventure “Hoppers” slid to second place, adding $18 million for a total of $120.4 million domestically and $242 million globally, signaling it might be Pixar’s first original hit since 2017’s “Coco.” The Indian action epic “Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge” made a remarkable debut with $9.5 million from just 987 locations, marking the biggest opening weekend ever for a Bollywood film in North America. Universal’s romantic drama “Reminders of Him” secured fifth place with $8 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $33 million and worldwide to $54 million. Conversely, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s R-rated monster mash “The Bride!” saw a shocking 86% decline, generating only $275,000 in its third outing and cementing its status as a financial disaster for Warner Bros. with $12.5 million domestically and $23 million globally against a staggering $90 million budget.
Overall ticket sales are currently 21% above the same point in the previous year, though revenues remain roughly 20% behind the pre-pandemic average.
