Russian Banking Giant Sberbank Cleared for Bitcoin Custody!
Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, has secured approval from the Bank of Russia to offer digital currency custody services, starting with Bitcoin. This development integrates crypto transactions into existing banking platforms, aligning with Russia's broader efforts to regulate digital assets, though using crypto as payment remains prohibited.
Sberbank, Russia’s largest financial institution, has announced it is the first in the country to receive official approval from the Bank of Russia for digital currency record-keeping and the facilitation of digital asset transfers. This landmark approval allows Sberbank to custody Bitcoin and other smaller cryptocurrencies, marking a significant step in Russia's rapidly evolving digital asset landscape.
The move aligns with broader efforts by the Russian government to regulate digital assets. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently signed a law to establish comprehensive regulation for digital currencies and digital rights within the country. This regulatory push has been ongoing, with the Bank of Russia publishing draft regulations for crypto trading in July and the State Duma preparing comprehensive digital asset regulations throughout the year.
Customers will be able to conduct cryptocurrency transactions directly through SberBank’s existing online platforms, including SberBank Online, SberInvestments, and the SberBusiness online banking platform, without the need for new applications or interfaces. The bank emphasized that this integration means digital currency transactions will operate within familiar banking environments, complete with standard customer identification, transaction monitoring, and reporting mechanisms.
Prior to a mass rollout, Sberbank plans to offer this new service to a limited number of customers. This development follows Sberbank's earlier announcement in July, where it revealed intentions to launch a Bitcoin and cryptocurrency wallet alongside digital asset custody services by December.
Despite these advancements in digital asset custody and regulation, it is important to note that using digital assets as a means of payment or legal tender within Russia remains prohibited. This ban on crypto as a form of payment has been in effect since 2022. Interestingly, President Putin has previously expressed a positive view on Bitcoin, stating that the leading cryptocurrency cannot be stopped.
