Rugby Star's Homecoming: Cheslin Kolbe Confirmed for Stormers Return!

After a celebrated career playing abroad, primarily in Japan and France, global rugby superstar Cheslin Kolbe has announced his decision to return to South Africa, driven by a profound desire to be closer to his family who are based in Cape Town. The 32-year-old winger terminated his contract with Japan's Suntory Sungoliath, describing it as the “most difficult decision” of his career. Kolbe expressed deep gratitude for his time in Japan, acknowledging that the country had become a true home for him and his family, but emphasized the sacrifices of living abroad, particularly the time away from his wife, Layla, and their three children.
Kolbe's announcement on May 25, followed by statements from his former Japanese club, cited “family circumstances” as the compelling reason for his move, highlighting a sacrifice he could not ignore. He thanked his sports agency, Roc Nation Sports, for facilitating this next chapter in his rugby career, which immediately sparked speculation among fans and media regarding his next club, with many eyes on the Stormers, where he began his professional journey.
Initial rumors in 2023 suggested the Stormers had offered Kolbe a substantial R15 million per year, which he reportedly declined for higher earnings in Japan. However, his wife, Layla Kolbe, refuted these allegations on social media, clarifying that no formal deal was ever on the table and expressing his desire to have returned to the Stormers sooner if circumstances allowed. The Stormers' Director of Rugby, John Dobson, had previously indicated a willingness to bring back key Springboks, noting that captain Siya Kolisi took a “massive pay cut” to rejoin the club.
The speculation has now culminated in a confirmed sensational return: Cheslin Kolbe has officially signed a deal to rejoin the DHL Stormers next season, marking a significant step in the club’s ambitious ‘Project 2029’ initiative. Kolbe, one of the most electrifying players in world rugby, brings world-class quality, championship experience, and an unmistakable X-factor back to his boyhood club. He grew up in Cape Town and came through the Stormers Rugby system, earning 49 caps before moving to France (Toulouse and Toulon) and then Japan in 2023.
Kolbe's decorated career includes representing the Junior Springboks in 2013, becoming an international Sevens star and winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games. He made his Springbok debut in 2018 and famously scored an iconic try in the 2019 Rugby World Cup Final in Japan. He has since become a two-time Rugby World Cup winner and is widely regarded as one of South African rugby’s most inspirational figures, consistently defying expectations due to his size through sheer courage, belief, and world-class skill.
John Dobson, the Stormers’ Director of Rugby, hailed Kolbe’s return as a “massive coup,” stating that “Cheslin is a son of this community and has remained a staunch DHL Stormers fan his whole life. He gives such hope and inspiration to our fans, so to have him back in our club colours is huge.” Dobson further emphasized Kolbe's unique playing ability and his exemplary attitude and work ethic, which are expected to lift the entire squad. He also highlighted Kolbe’s invaluable role in ‘Project 2029’, envisioning him contributing both on and off the field, serving as an ideal example for young talent with his discipline, conditioning, versatility, and work ethic until he turns 34 in 2029. Dobson expressed excitement about Kolbe, alongside Siya Kolisi, returning as iconic DHL Stormers figures who will mentor emerging talent, creating many more magical moments for the fans.
For Kolbe himself, this return fulfills a long-held dream. He shared, “Cape Town and this team have played such a big role in my life and career. When I left, it was always with the hope that one day I would come back home and represent this team again. To have that opportunity now means a huge amount to my family and I.” He expressed excitement about the strong connections he shares with players and coaches and his belief in ‘Project 2029’, acknowledging the club’s strong culture, talent, and clear future plan. The Stormers have also released a welcome-back video for Kolbe, celebrating his much-anticipated homecoming.
