Rovos Rail's Grand Return: 54 Tourists Explore Angola
The renowned Rovos Rail luxury tourist train has made its sixth journey to Angola, bringing 54 international tourists from various continents, including the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Asia, and Europe. Originating from Dar-es-Salan, Tanzania, the train travels along the historic Benguela Railway (CFB), exploring the rich natural beauty and diverse cultures of Angolan regions along the Lobito corridor.
On its recent trip, the Rovos Rail visited the municipality of Cuito, capital of Bié Province, for the sixth time, with the explicit aim of discovering the region's natural and cultural treasures. A significant stop for the tourists was the memorial of the Battle of Cuito, located in the commune of Cunje, a site of historical importance where over seven thousand bodies are interred. The journey also included a stop in Luau, where the tourists were immersed in an exhibition of the vibrant culture of the Tchokwe people, featuring traditional dance, music, and gastronomy.
The continuous visits by Rovos Rail underscore Angola's growing appeal as a tourist destination. South African tourist Nicholas Cophil affirmed that this initiative demonstrates Angola's safety and potential for fostering a thriving tourism industry. Isaías Cristovão Lucondo, administrator of Cunje, highlighted the crucial role these foreign visits play in promoting the country's image internationally and showcasing the province's significant tourism and cultural potential, envisioning it as a future strong national tourism industry. The train's route encompasses several Angolan provinces connected by the CFB, namely Moxico, Bié, Huambo, before concluding its journey in the southern province of Benguela. Rovos Rail's tourist expeditions to Angola began in 2019, with more regular operations commencing in 2022.
