Rockets Stun Lakers in Thriller, Force Pivotal Game 6!

The Houston Rockets secured a crucial 99-93 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 5 of their Western Conference first-round series on Wednesday night, staving off playoff elimination for the second consecutive game. This hard-fought win trims the Lakers' series lead to 3-2, sending the action back to Houston for Game 6 on Friday night.
Jabari Smith Jr. led the Rockets with 22 points, while Tari Eason contributed 18 points, and Alperen Sengun posted an impressive near triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. The fifth-seeded Rockets demonstrated a gritty performance, overcoming the return of Lakers guard Austin Reaves and securing their second straight win despite playing without their top scorer, Kevin Durant, who has missed four of the series' five games due to injuries.
For the Lakers, LeBron James delivered 25 points, with 17 of those coming in the second half, alongside seven assists. However, Los Angeles lost its second straight game after an improbable Game 3 rally. Austin Reaves, returning from a nine-game injury absence due to strained oblique muscles since April 2, had a strong comeback with 22 points and six assists, including 11 points and six assists in the first half of Game 5. Deandre Ayton added 18 points and 17 rebounds for the Lakers, who continue to be without NBA scoring champion Luka Doncic due to a strained hamstring, with no clear timeline for his return.
The game saw the Rockets coolly maintain an advantage into the second half, leading 87-74 with just under six minutes remaining. The Lakers mounted an 11-1 run, cutting Houston's lead to 88-85 after a driving layup by James. However, Reed Sheppard responded with a jumper and then notably ripped the ball away from James for a crucial dunk with 2:20 left. Despite an Ayton putback dunk making it 96-93 after James and Reaves missed open three-pointers, Amen Thompson hit one of two free throws, and another missed three-point attempt by James allowed Houston to seal the victory.
Historically, no team has ever recovered from a 3-0 deficit to win an NBA playoff series, though the Rockets are now halfway to forcing such a scenario. Only four out of 159 teams in NBA history have forced a Game 7 after being down 3-0. This marks a rare occasion for LeBron James' teams, as they have never blown a 2-0 series lead in his 23-year career. The Lakers' performance was marred by 15 often
