Rocker's Rebellion: Bryan Adams Unleashes Scathing Protest Song Against Donald Trump

Canadian rock icon Bryan Adams has released a potent protest song titled "51st State," directly addressing notions from the United States President about Canada becoming the 51st state. Launched on Wednesday, July 1, to coincide with Canada Day, which this year commemorated the 159th anniversary of Confederation, the song serves as a pointed rejoinder to U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated suggestions of annexing the sovereign nation.

In the energetic rock tune, Adams delivers a clear message of national unity and defiance, asserting, "We'll never be the 51st state." He emphasizes the strong bond between the two countries, stating, "We're way better hand in hand/ But the 49th parallel/ Has become a line drawn in the sand/ Let me give it to you straight/ When you're talking about my home/ You better show some respect/ Cuz up here we take care of our own."

Without explicitly naming Trump, Adams leaves little doubt as to his target, also taking aim at the President's economic policies. He warns, "So let me give you some advice mister/ You might have too much on your plate/ Go'n load us up with tariffs/ But we'll never be the 51st State." These lyrics directly reference Trump's second term, marked by repeated threats of annexation and the imposition of various on-again, off-again tariffs, which have spurred a significant rise in Canadian unity and national pride. This also led to retaliatory tariffs on energy exports, consumer boycotts of U.S. products, and the removal of American liquor from store shelves in certain Canadian regions.

The "Summer of '69" star also highlights the more than century-long, mutually beneficial relationship shared by Canada and the U.S., which share the world's longest international land boundary at 5,525 miles. Adams sings, "Maybe you've forgotten/ Maybe you just don't care/ But we always stood beside you/ For that liberty we share." He subtly warns that if pushed, his famously polite compatriots might not remain so. "You can push us to the brink/ But where the open road divides/ You'll find a wall of maple/ With us on the other side," he asserts.

Adams' new song was released on his own Bad Records label, which also issued his 16th studio album, Roll With the Punches, last August. He is scheduled to commence a U.S. tour this summer, beginning with a show at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis on July 24.
