Rock Royalty Knighted: Alex Van Halen Receives Esteemed Dutch Honor

Alex Van Halen, the renowned drummer and co-founder of the iconic rock band Van Halen, has been bestowed with a prestigious Knighthood in his birth country, The Netherlands. He was appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion (Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw) on Tuesday, September 1, in Nijmegen, the Dutch city where he and his late brother Eddie spent a significant part of their formative years. This high civilian honor is reserved for individuals who have made "extraordinary contributions" to society, recognizing Van Halen's remarkable career and profound global influence on fellow musicians.

The 73-year-old rock legend attended the ceremony at the Berchmanianum, the academy building of Radboud University. Mayor Hubert Bruls presented the royal honor, acknowledging Van Halen's pivotal role in writing a "remarkable chapter in the history of rock music." Reflecting on the honor, Van Halen remarked, "My cousin organized most of this. I’m very grateful. I think institutions like this are important in people’s lives because it adds a dignity and a gravity to what we do. Whether it’s actually deserved or not, that’s another question. But we can live up to it. That’s the whole thing, is you got to have something to live up to." Further cementing his connection to the city, Alex also signed Nijmegen’s Book of the City, a special tome for distinguished visitors, placing his name alongside luminaries such as Bruce Springsteen and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. A statement from the city emphasized, "Alex still feels a connection with Nijmegen, and Nijmegen in turn honors the band."
