Robotics Visionary Returns: Roomba Pioneer Unleashes AI Pet Robot to Conquer Homes
Colin Angle, the pioneering roboticist renowned for unleashing the Roomba vacuum, has unveiled his latest venture: an artificial intelligence-powered plush robot designed to potentially replace traditional pets. Christened the "Familiar," this four-legged prototype was revealed on Monday, embodying a creature the size of a bulldog with distinctive doe-like eyes, bear cub ears, and paws. Its touch-sensitive fake fur invites interaction, capable of extending into a welcoming stretch. Angle, who founded the startup Familiar Machines & Magic after his long tenure as CEO of Roomba maker iRobot, deliberately chose a form factor that avoids direct mimicry of humans, dogs, or cats to bypass existing preconceptions.
This sophisticated, lifelike machine is a testament to the advancements in artificial intelligence technology, a feat that would have been impossible when Angle co-founded iRobot in 1990 or launched the inaugural Roomba in 2002. While not the first endeavor into pet-like household robots—Sony's Aibo robotic dog being a notable predecessor from the late 1990s, rebooted in 2018—Angle asserts that the Familiar achieves an unprecedented level of interaction and companionship. He emphasized that the goal is to create something more than a mere "watch-me toy"; it's about fostering a bond where owners "want to hug, you want to pet" the robot, experiencing shared happiness when it expresses joy.
Designed to be mobile and engaging, the Familiar is envisioned to follow its owner throughout the home, from the kitchen to encouraging outdoor walks. It will communicate through emotive, animal-like sounds rather than speech, yet it possesses audio input "ears" and an advanced AI system capable of understanding and learning from human vocalizations. This learning capability, significantly bolstered by recent breakthroughs in generative AI (like those powering chatbots such as ChatGPT), allows the robot to gradually adapt its behavior based on its interactions with people. Angle noted that such a development would not have been feasible even six months prior.
Angle's illustrious career includes a quarter-century at the helm of iRobot, transforming Roomba into a widely adopted household robot. He departed as CEO and chairman in 2024 after Amazon's planned acquisition of the company fell through. Familiar Machines was subsequently founded and operated in "stealth" mode in Woburn, Massachusetts, until its public debut at The Wall Street Journal's Future of Everything conference in New York. While commercial availability is still some time away, a key demographic for the Familiar is retired individuals who might be past the prime age for pet ownership. Angle explained that this group often enjoys pets but is deterred by the associated fears and obligations of caring for them in later life.
The name "Familiar" carries deep historical and folkloric resonance, evoking animal companions from witches' cats to wizards' owls, and the "daemons" in Philip Pullman's fantasy novels. Angle expressed surprise at successfully trademarking the ancient term. He has assembled a formidable team of robotics advisers, including Marc Raibert, a locomotion pioneer from Boston Dynamics (creator of the Spot robot), and Cynthia Breazeal, known for the Kismet robot head and the Jibo speaker robot, both early explorations into social robot expressions. Many of these advisers, who researched together at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, share a skepticism for the current trend of sleek humanoid robots that, despite human-like movement, currently lack significant practical utility.
Among these advisers is Maja Matarić, a computer science professor at the University of Southern California and co-founder of the field of socially assistive robotics a quarter-century ago. Her work focuses on designing robots for social and emotional support. Matarić recounted her immediate inclination to hug, pet, and play with Angle's prototype, noting its adorable rather than creepy appeal. Decades of research in human-robot interactions, she stated, demonstrate that a "cute, personalized and vulnerable" robot is far more endearing than alternatives. She envisions the Familiar as particularly valuable in nursing homes or for providing emotional support in mental health contexts. Matarić further highlighted that generative AI's advances, enabling robots to readily comprehend human speech, have significantly broadened the potential impact of such technologies on the general population.
