Robert Kirkman Teases Darker Turn and Major Villains in Invincible Season 4 Ahead of 2026 Premiere

Ahead of its anticipated fourth season, Invincible creator Robert Kirkman sat down with Collider's Maggie Lovitt at New York Comic Con 2025 to discuss the acclaimed animated superhero series for Prime Video. Kirkman, a prominent figure in the comic book industry known for works like The Walking Dead, shared insights into the upcoming season, which is set to release in 2026, with a fifth season already greenlit by Amazon.
Invincible centers on teenager Mark Grayson (voiced by Steven Yeun), who follows in the footsteps of his father, Nolan Grayson, also known as Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), to become Earth's new mightiest hero. The series features a star-studded voice cast including Sandra Oh, Gillian Jacobs, and Jason Mantzoukas, with Lee Pace joining Season 4 as General Thragg, Grand Regent of the Viltrum Empire.
Kirkman emphasized that Invincible is an "escalating show," promising that Season 4 will top the intensity of the Season 3 finale. He teased that the events of Season 4 have been building since the first minute of Season 1, making it a pivotal transitional period for Mark. Following the consequences of his encounters with Angstrom Levy and Conquest, Mark will embark on a "dark road," deciding to take a more lethal approach to villains. Fans can also expect a potentially increased presence of Omni-Man in the upcoming season.
Regarding General Thragg, Kirkman cryptically stated that viewers will see him "far more than you might expect, far sooner than you might expect it," assuring fans that they won't be wishing for more of the character. This suggests Thragg will be a significant and early threat in the season.
A unique aspect of Season 4 is Episode 4, which Kirkman personally wrote. This episode features an original storyline not found in the comics and will heavily involve Bruce Campbell. Kirkman expressed his excitement about Campbell's contribution, describing him as an "icon in the industry" and highlighting that the episode will be "off the beaten path" from typical Invincible narratives, promising a fun and exciting sidestep for fans.
Kirkman also touched upon the show's successful "meta-casting," where actors like Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Conquest) and Bruce Campbell are cast in roles that playfully reference their past work or public personas. He believes that in today's crowded media landscape, such casting choices add an "additive" quality, helping the show stand out by drawing attention beyond just a great story and performances.
Finally, Kirkman weighed in on a long-standing debate at Collider: who would win in a fight between Omni-Man, Superman, and Homelander. Without hesitation, Kirkman declared Homelander a "weakling" due to his grounded world context. He then emphatically stated, "Superman sucks. Omni-Man takes him down easily," asserting that Omni-Man would "completely trash that guy," a stance he defends against online critics despite acknowledging James Gunn's recent movie was "excellent."
