Robert Eggers' 'Werwulf' Unleashes Star-Studded Werewolf Thriller

Robert Eggers'highly anticipated medieval horror film,"Werwulf," is quickly taking shape with the reported casting of two stars familiar with his directorial style: Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp. Both actors recently collaborated with Eggers on his successful gothic horror remake, "Nosferatu," and their re-engagement highlights Eggers' established practice of working with a trusted ensemble of performers. This pattern is evident in his recurring collaborations with actors such as Anya Taylor-Joy, WillemDafoe, and Ralph Ineson.

While the specific roles Taylor-Johnson and Depp will undertake in "Werwulf" remain undisclosed, their prior acclaimed performances, particularly Depp's multi-layered and at times 'delightfully depraved' portrayal and Taylor-Johnson's artful transformation in "Nosferatu," suggest they are strong contenders for lead roles.

Scheduled for a Christmas Day 2026 release, "Werwulf" is set to begin filming in September in Elstree, England. The screenplay was co-written by Eggers and Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón, who also contributed to Eggers' Viking epic "The Northman." Eggers himself has described "Werwulf" as the "darkest thing" he has ever written, promising a profound and intense cinematic experience. True to Eggers' renowned commitment to historical accuracy and period realism, the film will be set in 13th-century England and is expected to feature dialogue entirely in Old English, complete with annotations and translations to ensure audience comprehension. While initial rumors circulated about the film being shot in black and white, these have since been dispelled.
