Renowned Lawyer Sangwa Ditches Legal Practice for New Political Movement

Constitutional lawyer John Sangwa has officially announced his departure from active legal practice to embark on a political journey, a decision that follows his earlier declaration of readiness to contest the presidency. Sangwa stated that his move is driven by a profound conviction that Zambia's path to rebirth necessitates a comprehensive moral, civil, and institutional awakening.
In a statement released from Lusaka on Sunday, Sangwa confirmed his immediate withdrawal from Simeza, Sangwa & Associates, the prominent legal firm he co-founded and faithfully served for more than three decades. This significant personal and professional sacrifice, he noted, is an "offering of personal comfort for the greater purpose of national renewal," underscoring the deep commitment required for the country's rebuilding efforts.
Sangwa intends to dedicate his full attention to mobilizing citizens nationwide under the newly established "Movement for National Renewal (MNR)." This civic movement is explicitly devoted to the monumental task of rebuilding Zambia upon the fundamental principles of integrity, truth, and constitutional discipline. The primary objective of the MNR will be to lay robust groundwork, enabling citizens to participate meaningfully and responsibly in the democratic processes leading up to the pivotal 2026 general election and subsequent electoral cycles.
The ambitious first national goal for the MNR is to cultivate a movement comprising at least one million citizens who are deeply committed to national renewal and are ready to live by and uphold the Constitution. Sangwa has set a target of achieving this critical milestone by December 2025, which he envisions will mark "a new chapter of civic readiness and shared responsibility" for the nation.
Looking ahead, Sangwa articulated that once this desired level of national organization and citizen engagement is achieved, the citizens themselves, through extensive consultation, would collectively decide whether to evolve the civic movement into a full-fledged political organization. This transformation would serve to give their ideals and aspirations concrete political expression within the national landscape.
Issuing a direct appeal, Sangwa encouraged all Zambians who resonate with this cause to take proactive steps. "To all those across Zambia who believe in this cause: you know each other better, therefore do not wait for me to tell you what to do," he urged. He further emphasized the importance of grassroots organization, calling on citizens to reclaim their constitutional rights and duties by structuring their efforts within their homes, communities, wards, districts, and provinces, thereby giving tangible form to the movement for national renewal.
