Red Sea Film Festival: Star Power Unleashed, Biopics and Blockbusters Take Center Stage!

The fifth edition of the Red Sea Film Festival is set to open on December 4, presenting a diverse and star-studded lineup that promises to captivate audiences. The festival will commence with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) premiere of Rowan Athale’s highly anticipated film “Giant,” a compelling biographical drama about the British-Yemeni boxing champion Prince Naseem ‘Naz’ Hamed.
“Giant” delves into Hamed’s remarkable rags-to-riches journey, chronicling his rise from humble beginnings in Sheffield to becoming a world champion. The film highlights his unwavering determination as he faced down and overcame the pervasive racism and Islamophobia prevalent in Britain during the 1980s and ’90s, ultimately cementing his status as a global sporting icon. Egyptian-British actor Amir El Masry stars as Hamed, with Pierce Brosnan portraying his instrumental Irish boxing trainer, Brendan Ingle. The narrative explores the unlikely yet tender relationship between Naz and Ingle, emphasizing the crucial role Ingle played in Hamed's path to success. The film boasts Sylvester Stallone as one of its executive producers and is financed by AGC Studios and BondIt Media Capital, with Mark Lane of Tea Shop Productions, Kevin Sampson of White Star Productions, and Stuart Ford, AGC Studios chairman and CEO, serving as producers.
Faisal Baltyuor, CEO of the Red Sea Film Foundation, expressed that the selection of “Giant” as the opening film is an artistic celebration of regional talents who have established a significant presence on the global film scene. He noted that the film, through the story of an Arab world boxing champion, portrays an inspiring journey of perseverance and reflects pride in identity, underscoring the increasing prominence of Arab stars in international productions alongside global names and reaffirming Arab cinema's powerful standing in the global film landscape.
Beyond its grand opening, the Red Sea Film Festival unveiled a rich and varied program featuring acclaimed films and renowned actors. The lineup includes performances by Hollywood luminaries such as Angelina Jolie, Paul Dano, Jude Law, Anthony Mackie, and Ben Kingsley. The International Spectacular strand promises a global cinematic experience with films like Angelina Jolie-led drama “Couture” by Alice Winocour; Mamoru Hosoda’s anime “Scarlet,” a unique adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”; Olivier Assayas’ political thriller/comedy “The Wizard of the Kremlin,” featuring Paul Dano and Jude Law; the Spanish dance documentary “Farruquito: A Flamenco Story”; and Rupert Wyatt’s Saudi Arabia-set drama “Desert Warrior,” starring Ben Kingsley and Anthony Mackie.
The festival also includes two Special Screenings: Oliver Laxe’s “Sirât” and Kaouther Ben Hania’s “The Voice of Hind Rajab.” The Arab Spectacular program shines a spotlight on regional narratives, presenting Annemarie Jacir’s “Palestine 36,” a Red Sea-funded portrait of a photographer documenting rebellion; Haifaa Al Mansour’s “Unidentified,” a female-driven detective thriller challenging notions of violence against women; “A Matter of Life and Death,” a poignant Saudi love story set in Jeddah; and Amine Lakhnech’s “The Fakenapping,” a Netflix film produced by Telfaz11.
The Competition strand, showcasing films from Asia, Africa, and the Arab world, features seven films that have received support from the Red Sea Film Foundation’s ecosystem. These include Saudi Arabia’s Academy Award submission “Hijra,” directed by Shahad Ameen; “A Sad and Beautiful World,” a drama by Cyril Aris exploring the enduring bond of childhood sweethearts; Zain Duraie’s debut feature “Sink,” which follows a mother grappling with her son’s mental state; and the supernatural thriller “Roqia” by Yanis Koussim, set during Algeria’s Black Decade. Additional Red Sea Film Foundation-supported titles are the adult animation “Allah Is Not Obliged,” about an African child soldier which premiered at Annecy, and the Kenyan documentary “Truck Mama.”
Further highlights of the festival include the world premiere of “Barni,” Mohammed Sheikh’s debut drama set in Somalia, focusing on a missing child; the MENA premieres of “Two Seasons, Two Strangers,” the Locarno Golden Leopard-winning Japanese drama from Sho Miyake; “Lost Land,” the first-ever Rohingya-language drama by Akio Fujimoto; Cherien Dabis’ “All That’s Left of You,” which tells the tale of a Palestinian teenager caught in a West Bank protest from his mother's perspective; “Stories,” the new film by Abu Bakr Shawky; and the Iraqi drama “Irkalla Gligamesh’s Dream,” directed by Mohamed Al-Daradji. This comprehensive lineup underscores the Red Sea Film Festival's commitment to showcasing diverse cinematic voices from across the globe.
