Ray Winstone Reveals Epic Drunken Star Wars Audition Fail

Ray Winstone, known for his roles in films like “Black Widow,” recently recounted a memorable and somewhat ill-fated audition for the “Star Wars” franchise. During a conversation with Far Out, Winstone revealed that he showed up to his try-out for the part of Padmé Amidala’s father, Ruwee Naberrie, under the influence of alcohol, describing himself as “pissed” after being “out all night” prior to the audition. This led to a less-than-ideal casting experience, with Winstone stating that it “didn’t go well” and that he “had words” during the session.
Winstone recalled sensing immediately that he was “wrong for the part.” He also noted George Lucas’s behavior during the audition, remembering Lucas yawning throughout, which Winstone presumed was due to “jet lag.” The interaction became more confrontational when Lucas remained silent after the try-out, prompting Winstone to suggest, “Why don’t we both have a 15-minute sleep and then I’ll fuck off?” He also took “umbrage” at Lucas relaying the message about his unsuitability for the role through a third party rather than directly.
Despite the contentious audition, Winstone holds no regrets about missing the role. He confessed that the type of film “Star Wars” is, with its extensive “bluescreen work,” would “bore the arse off” him. The role of Padmé’s father ultimately went to Graeme Blundell, who appeared as Ruwee Naberrie in “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,” released in 2005.
Interestingly, Winstone later reunited with George Lucas just three years after “Revenge of the Sith.” This collaboration was on “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” where Lucas served as a writer and executive producer. Winstone, in contrast to his “Star Wars” audition, successfully played the antagonist George “Mac” Michale in the 2008 film. Lucas, according to Winstone, either didn’t remember the earlier incident or didn’t hold a grudge, as he was “fine” with Winstone. Winstone’s more recent acting credits include projects like “Damsel,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” and “The Gentlemen” TV series.
