Raising Emotionally Intelligent Children In a Fast Paced World.
In recent times, many African homes have experienced situations where a child overreacts to a simple act of discipline or correction.
Something as simple as a rebuke when a child acts rashly as a response, or when a child acts indifferent to important matters can provoke a more dramatic reaction from the child.
The parent’s response often determines how the scenario unfolds and the lessons or hurts the child takes away from that experience.
The world is fast changing, and more attention is now being paid to emotional intelligence and maturity, rather than just physical strength or academic prowess. Today, it matters for parents to raise children who are emotionally aware and able to respond to situations appropriately, instead of being led by fleeting emotions. Only then, can they manage life and relationships to people properly and live intentional lives.
As the society grows even more fast-paced and complex, one question becomes crucial: How can parents raise emotionally intelligent children?
What Is Emotional Intelligence and Why It Matters.
According to Psychology Today, emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions, as well as the emotions of others.
The BBCnotes that emotional intelligence (EQ) in children is crucial for managing emotions, building relationships, and navigating challenges with resilience.
Hence it is very important for adequate attention to be paid to emotional intelligence, especially when it comes to child development.
Emotional intelligence in child development helps to build:
Self-awareness and self-management: The ability to recognize and regulate emotions, preventing emotional overwhelm. This allows children to pause, process their feelings, and respond thoughtfully without any form of irrational behaviour.
Empathy: The capacity to understand and share the feelings of others. Empathy helps children navigate tense situations with calmness and kindness. It helps them to properly put themselves in the shoes of others and act appropriately.
Social skills: The ability to manage relationships, work well in groups, listen actively, and resolve conflicts through communication rather than aggression. This is necessary for them to communicate their opinions clearly, and also understand others as well.
Resilience and self-motivation: The drive to stay committed through challenges and view obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow. Emotional intelligence brings self awareness, and this is very important in fueling passion and consistency amongst individuals.
In many African homes, parents tend to focus more on IQ (Intelligence Quotient) than EQ (Emotional Quotient). However, both are essential and should work hand in hand for proper individual growth and development.
According to Early Years TV, both are meant to work synergistically; children need cognitive abilities to learn and analyze information plus emotional skills to collaborate, manage stress, and maintain motivation through challenges.
It is no longer enough to raise children who are academically excellent but emotionally unaware. Such children may grow up unprepared to navigate real-world relationships and pressures effectively.

Modern Parenting and the Digital Challenge.
Modern parenting has become more complex due to the digital age we live in. Distractions such as phones, television, and the internet compete for both parents’ and children’s attention. Busy work schedules and social pressures further limit meaningful connection within families.
Setting simple screen-time rules and carving out special family time can make a big difference. Having meals together, doing shared chores, or telling stories before bed helps children learn to communicate openly and connect emotionally without distractions.
Unfortunately, many children learn emotional cues from social media, where expressions of anger or detachment are often glorified. When parents do not monitor what their children consume online or fail to communicate openly with them, emotional maturity is stunted.
To raise emotionally balanced children, parents must be intentional about communication, a steady presence, and continually leading by example, even in the little things.

Imagine an eight year old boy who slams his bedroom door after being told to stop playing video games. He stomps away angrily, feeling hurt and unfairly treated. If the parents respond by shouting back at him or ignoring him altogether, it can escalate into a pattern of unresolved anger and poor communication. But if the parents approach him calmly and in a more levelheaded manner, naming the emotion and explaining the reason for the rule, the child learns to name and manage that anger and frustration. in the end, both parties walk away with better understanding and no ill feelings lurking.
Practical Ways to Raise Emotionally Intelligent Children.
A Forbes study highlights that emotional intelligence is learned, not something children develop naturally. If parents were never taught how to understand and regulate their own emotions, teaching their children to do so can be challenging.
Here are practical ways to nurture emotional intelligence at home:
Model emotional awareness - Parents should teach their children to adequately name their emotions and manage them effectively. This helps children recognize emotional patterns and regulate their responses in a suitable and appropriate manner, without outbursts or strife.
Encourage open conversations - Parents should create space for their children to express themselves, listen actively, and validate their feelings. When children feel heard, they learn that emotions can be communicated without shame or fear and this teaches them to be more emotionally stable and expressive amongst everyone around them.
Teach empathy -Parents should encourage their children to be caring and sensitive to others. Activities such as helping friends, volunteering, or talking about others’ experiences helps to foster compassion and social awareness amongst developing children.
Minimize digital distractions - Parents should set healthy boundaries with digital devices and prioritize quality family time. Creating opportunities for real-life connection like family dinners, storytelling, or outdoor play allows children to practice emotional regulation and communication.
Such simple routines can be used to teach emotional skills effectively without lengthy talks.
In conclusion, emotional intelligence must be reinforced daily, not taught once and forgotten. It takes consistent effort for children to truly grasp its importance and necessity in today's world.
When parents prioritize emotional awareness, they raise children who thrive not just academically but also in relationships and personal growth. Practicing emotional intelligence begins with small daily choices like choosing patience, empathy, and understanding, and from there, a strong foundation is built for a healthier, emotionally stable generation.
