Wet weather is expected to return to San Diego County this week, with rain possibly beginning as early as Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to stay in the low 60s near the coast and the downtown area this week, with overnight temperatures around the low 50s.

There is up to a 15% chance of light precipitation on Tuesday as the marine layer deepens from coastal to foothill areas throughout the county, with the heavier rain arriving later in the week, forecasters said.

“The timing of onset of heavier precipitation later this week is slightly slower, with the best chances (80-90%) now occurring Thursday evening through Friday morning,” the National Weather Service said in a discussion.

Mountain highs will be in the mid-40s to low 50s. The deserts should also see cloudy conditions and chances for showers by mid-week, with moderate winds and highs in the mid-60s to low 70s.

The San Diego surf forecast includes a moderate-risk rip current, with surf from 2 to 4 feet and west swell from 270 degrees early in the week.

“Northwest winds will strengthen Tuesday afternoon through early Wednesday, with a 30-50% chance of sustained winds over 25 knots across the outer coastal waters and a 15-25% chance of winds over 21 knots across the inner coastal waters through this period,” forecasters said.

“This will result in elevated, choppy seas, especially in the outer coastal waters. Winds diminish and become southerly Wednesday afternoon into the evening.”
