Rain triggers mudslide along national highway near Vamanjoor | Mangaluru News - Times of India

angaluru: With heavy rain continuing to lash Mangaluru and parts of the Dakshina Kannada district, a mudslide occurred adjacent to NH-169 at Thiruvail village near Vamanjoor.
The IMD has issued a red alert warning of the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts until Monday.Due to the heavy rainfall, a soil slide occurred, resulting in the accumulation of displaced soil by the side of the highway. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has mobilised its team to the site, and the removal of soil from the highway is currently in progress. NHAI has implemented proper safety measures and traffic diversions to ensure the smooth movement of traffic at the location.
No serious damage was caused by the slide, and the prompt response helped manage the situation effectively, according to officials.Meanwhile, several parts of Mangaluru city remained inundated after heavy rain continued on Sunday. The compound wall and gate of a house near Suvarna Lane in Kankanady were destroyed after a retaining wall on the opposite side of a road collapsed. Similarly, the retaining wall behind an apartment in Shivabhag collapsed, causing damage to the building and some vehicles.
Rainwater flooded the house of Achyuth Shet and Savithri Shet in Dongarakeri ward near Kudroli temple. Social worker Manjula Nayak said that the lack of a proper drainage system caused inconvenience to the residents. Upon learning of the issue, former mayor Shashidhar Hegde visited the site, brought the matter to the attention of municipal officials, and the rainwater was subsequently cleared with their assistance, she said.Several houses in Shivanagar near Pandeshwar were also flooded due to the heavy rain. MLC Ivan D'Souza said that he visited several houses and urged the officials to inspect the area to take necessary actions immediately.Free lunch from Kadri templeThe management committee of Kadri Sri Manjunatha Temple has decided to provide lunch for those affected by the rain this afternoon. Several areas in Mangaluru city are flooded, with water entering homes, causing difficulties for people to cook meals.
In response, lunch arrangements have been made at the Kadri temple for such families. The management committee has requested the affected residents to collect food for their family members from the temple.MLA clears the blocked drainRainwater was flowing on the road near Kodimbadi Govt Higher Primary School on the Puttur Uppinangady road, disrupting vehicle movement. Observing this, MLA Ashok Rai fetched a hoe from a nearby house and cleared the blocked drain by the roadside, setting an example.Damage to compound walls of PilikulaHeavy rains caused damage to the compound walls of Pilikula Nisargadhama at two locations. Around 10 trees have also been uprooted due to the downpour. Restoration work will commence once the rain reduces, sources said.Meanwhile, a tree fell on a moving two-wheeler at Koppadagandi in Mithabagilu, Belthangady taluk, injuring two persons. The injured are Gummanna and Vimala, who were admitted to a private hospital in Ujire.
Later, the tree was cleared to facilitate vehicle movement.Holiday for schools todayIn view of the Red Alert, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner and District Disaster Management Authority Chairman, Mullai Muhilan MP, has declared a holiday for all anganwadi centres, primary and high schools (govt and private) in Mangaluru, Bantwal, Ullal, Mulky and Moodbidri taluks on Monday. Udupi DC Vidya Kumari K has declared a holiday for primary, high schools and anganwadi centres in Udupi district on Monday.
