Rain, gusty wind damage hockey astroturf in Khunti - The Times of India
Ranchi: The Thursday morning shower caused destruction in many places paralysing the normal life of people.
In the Khunti district, strong wind accompanying the heavy rainfall and hailstorms swept away a tin shed of
Birsa Munda football stadium
, which later fell on the astroturf of the nearby hockey stadium, severely damaging the international standard turf.
"However, no harm was caused to anyone due to the accident. Trainees, coaches and staff members of the stadium are safe. The exact amount of damage has not been assessed yet. But the blue astroturf, which is an international standard turf for hockey costs in crores," said an official of the Khunti district sports department.
The official added the entire district suffered from power disruption throughout the day on Thursday and trees were uprooted in many locations across the Khunti district. "It is instructed to coaches to suspend the training till the weather condition improves. Around 30 trainees are undergoing hockey training in the stadium," he added.
The power disruption has also brought the capital city Ranchi to its knees. The downpour has damaged electrical wires and transformers, resulting in prolonged power cuts in several localities, including Bariatu, Upper Bazaar, Rampur, Sidroll, and Argora.
Rajesh Sharma, a resident of Upper Bazaar, stated "We faced power cuts for more than five hours since early morning making it difficult to manage household course."
Priya Verma from Rampur highlighted the inconvenience caused to students and professionals working from home. Verma said, "Without electricity, it was impossible to work or study. Internet connectivity was down, and mobile phone batteries ran out. The power cut was observed in the morning around 6 am and continued till 2:30 pm."
General Manager of JBVNL's Ranchi Supply Area Board, Manmohan Kumar, said, "Whenever we detect a fault in the cables or transformers, our team takes immediate action to resolve it efficiently."
