R&B/Hip-Hop Royalty Rocks NYC: Leon Thomas, GELO & Ravyn Lenae Ignite Billboard's Live Concert

The Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop LIVE concert transformed Webster Hall into an electrifying hub of music on Friday, September 5, drawing immense crowds and celebrating the vibrant future of R&B and hip-hop. This highly anticipated free event, a central feature of Billboard’s Hip-Hop & R&B Week, was proudly presented by State Farm, Ralph Lauren, and UnitedMasters. It showcased a stellar lineup of both emerging talents and established artists, leaving attendees thoroughly energized and satisfied.
The evening commenced with a palpable buzz, as New Yorkers lined city blocks, hoping to gain entry to the coveted event. DJ Ohso meticulously set the mood, skillfully blending hip-hop bangers, sultry Afro tunes, and even a touch of Paramore, preparing the eager audience for the anticipated showcases from Billboard’s Rookies of the Year.
Armanii initiated the live performances with his distinctive fusion of dancehall and hip-hop grooves. Fans enthusiastically swayed to crowd-pleasers such as “8:00 PM” and “JUMP (Bounce),” establishing an upbeat and infectious tone for the night. Following Armanii’s engaging set, Billboard’s Hip-Hop Rookie of the Year, GELO, commanded the stage. He ignited the party with cuts from his debut album, *League of My Own*. It was, however, his viral hit “Tweaker” that truly captivated the crowd, locking them in with its unifying “woah’s” and “ahh’s.”
Next, Billboard’s African Rookie of the Year, Odeal, made an immediate and impactful entrance, his mere sight prompting an eruption of cheers from the audience. Dozens of diehard supporters sang along to every syllable of his popular songs, including “Soh-Soh,” “London Summers,” and most notably “Miami,” a track he performs with the evening’s headliner, Leon Thomas.
A graceful shift in atmosphere occurred with Ravyn Lenae, who floated onto the stage and swiftly transported the crowd to a more mystical realm. Embodying an R&B fairy godmother persona, Lenae soulfully performed her biggest hits, including “One Wish” and “Love Me Not,” enchanting the room with her ethereal delivery.
The night culminated in a powerful headlining set by Leon Thomas, who recently earned the Breakthrough of the Year Award at Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players 2025 event. Thomas, a fast-rising R&B star, delivered an electrifying performance, demonstrating his extensive musical arsenal by expertly railing on the drums, shredding on the guitar, and pouring his heart out into every song. The already enthusiastic crowd rallied anew when Ty Dolla $ign made a surprise appearance. Casually strutting out, Ty Dolla $ign joined Thomas on stage, performing his verse on “Far Fetched.” The energy surged further as the DJ then queued up “Carnival,” the chart-topping *Vultures 1* track by Ye (formerly Kanye West) and Ty Dolla $ign from 2024, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Leon Thomas and his band, alongside Ty Dolla $ign, truly rocked the house, delivering an unforgettable finale.
Beyond the captivating musical performances, attendees enjoyed interactive brand experiences, including a State Farm-sponsored custom T-shirt printing station and a L’Oréal–Ralph’s Club photo booth, adding another layer to the festive atmosphere. Billboard CEO Mike Van underscored the event's significance, stating, “Billboard has always been at the forefront of recognizing and promoting emerging talent. This concert is a testament to the vibrant future of hip-hop and R&B and our commitment to celebrating artists who are shaping the music landscape.” The concert proved to be a resounding success, leaving the audience sweaty and thoroughly satisfied, marking a memorable highlight in the music calendar.
