PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — Schools in Prince William County and Manassas will be closed Wednesday due to the winter storm.

Prince William County Public Schools is closing with a code red due to the winter storm's impacts on roads and parking lots. Code Red means schools, offices and the School Age Child Care program are closed. School activities are canceled including field trips, team practices, club meetings, interscholastic contests and athletic contests. Non-school activities, including Adult Education, evening school classes, and recreational programs scheduled in school buildings, are also canceled. PWCS students may use the snow day as an option day to work on assignments.

Employees will not report for work, with the exception of inclement weather employees. Teachers may do optional telework, and professional development activities are canceled.

Manassas City Public Schools and offices are also closed Wednesday due to inclement weather conditions. Employees will follow a Code Blue.

Manassas, Prince William County and the rest of the region are under a winter storm warning from 1 p.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said. Forecasters are calling for 4 to 7 inches of snow Tuesday as well as significant icing Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Moderate to heavy snow will continue through Tuesday evening, according to the National Weather Service said. Snowfall rates around 1 to 2 inches per hour are expected. The heavy snow will combine with falling temperatures and rapidly stick on all surfaces during the evening commute and Wednesday morning's commute.
