PSG Secures Historic Champions League Title Against Inter Milan

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) achieved a historic milestone on May 31, 2025, by winning their first-ever UEFA Champions League title, decisively defeating Inter Milan 5-0 in a remarkably one-sided final at Munich's Allianz Arena. This victory, the biggest margin in the competition's final history, also sealed a prestigious treble for the Parisian club, marking a triumphant culmination after years of significant investment from their Qatari owners.

The French champions asserted their dominance early in the match. Achraf Hakimi, playing against his former club, opened the scoring in the 12th minute, side-footing a pass from teenage sensation Desire Doue. PSG doubled their lead just eight minutes later when a rapid counter-attack, initiated after defender Willian Pacho prevented the ball from going out at PSG's end, led to Doue firing a deflected shot past Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer. The 19-year-old Doue, who delivered a Man of the Match performance, struck again in the 63rd minute. A surging run from Vitinha, who exchanged passes with Ousmane Dembele, culminated in a pass to Doue, who calmly drilled the ball into the net to make it 3-0. Doue, at 19 years and 362 days, became only the third teenager to score in a Champions League final, and the youngest ever to both score and assist.

PSG's relentless pressure continued as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the Georgian international, added a fourth goal in the 73rd minute with a brilliant low finish after being set up by Dembele, who provided his second assist of the night. The scoring was completed in the 87th minute when 19-year-old substitute Senny Mayulu played a one-two with Bradley Barcola before lashing in the fifth goal, becoming the fourth teenager to score in a Champions League final. This emphatic 5-0 victory marked PSG as the first team to score five goals in the final since Benfica in 1962.

The triumph was a significant personal achievement for PSG coach Luis Enrique, who became only the sixth manager to win the Champions League with two different clubs, having previously led Barcelona to victory in 2015. Enrique, praised for transforming PSG into a well-drilled, balanced, and ruthless unit, also joined an elite group by winning a treble with two different European clubs. PSG became just the second French club to lift European football's most coveted trophy, following Marseille's win in 1993, which was also in Munich.

For Inter Milan, the night was one of profound disappointment. The Italian side, who had lost the 2023 final to Manchester City, were thoroughly outclassed and appeared disjointed throughout the match. The heavy defeat meant Inter ended their season trophyless, having also missed out on the Serie A title. Following the match, speculation intensified regarding the future of Inter manager Simone Inzaghi, who acknowledged he would meet with the club to discuss his situation amidst reported lucrative interest from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. He stated, "My future? We will see in the next days. I will meet with the club and we will assess the situation together."

The historic victory for PSG drew widespread reactions. French President Emmanuel Macron hailed it as a "day of glory for PSG" and congratulated the team. Former PSG star Kylian Mbappe, who had departed for Real Madrid, also sent a congratulatory message to his former club, which was met with some irony from fans online given PSG won the title the year after he left. Pundits also lauded PSG's performance, with former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand stating that PSG "suffocated Inter Milan and pressed the life out of them." Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard praised midfielder Vitinha's commanding display, comparing him to "the new Xavi."

Both teams had navigated challenging paths to the final. PSG overcame early stumbles in the group stage before defeating English heavyweights Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal. Inter Milan emerged from a tough group and eliminated Feyenoord, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona, the latter in a dramatic 7-6 aggregate semifinal victory. However, on the night at the Allianz Arena, it was PSG's youthful and dynamic side that comprehensively outplayed their opponents to etch their name into Champions League history.
