PSG Defeats Inter Milan to Claim Maiden Champions League Title

Paris Saint-Germain etched their name into football history on a remarkable night in Munich, May 31, 2025, by delivering a breathtaking performance to secure their first-ever UEFA Champions League title. The French champions outclassed Inter Milan with a commanding 5-0 victory, the largest winning margin recorded in the history of any European Cup or Champions League final. This triumph marked the culmination of PSG's long quest for European glory and signaled the arrival of a new dominant force in continental football.
The victory was profoundly emotional for PSG coach Luis Enrique, who wept tears of joy as he became only the sixth coach to win the prestigious tournament with two different clubs, following his 2015 success with Barcelona. The occasion was made even more poignant by a tribute to his late daughter, Xana, who passed away in 2019. Enrique wore a t-shirt bearing an image of himself and Xana planting a PSG flag, and the PSG Ultras unfurled a giant banner with a similar depiction, a gesture that deeply moved the Asturian coach. This victory also meant Enrique joined Pep Guardiola as one of only two managers to achieve a second continental treble (League, Cup, and Champions League) with different clubs.
The centerpiece of PSG's stunning victory was the brilliant 19-year-old winger, Desire Doue. The teenager confirmed his status as a burgeoning superstar, delivering a man-of-the-match performance on European club football's biggest stage. Doue was instrumental from the start, providing the assist for Achraf Hakimi's opening goal. He then scored two goals himself, the first in the 20th minute and the second in the 63rd minute, effectively sealing the win. With this performance, Doue became the third teenager to score in a Champions League final (after Patrick Kluivert and Carlos Alberto), the youngest player to score two goals in a European Cup or Champions League final since Eusébio in 1962, and the first player to be directly involved in three goals (two goals, one assist) in a final.
PSG's dominance was evident from the first whistle. Achraf Hakimi opened the scoring in the 12th minute against his former club, after being set up by Doue following a pass from Vitinha. Desire Doue then doubled the lead eight minutes later, capitalizing on a swift counter-attack initiated by Ousmane Dembele. Doue added his second, and PSG's third, in the 63rd minute with Vitinha providing the assist. The relentless pressure continued, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia adding a fourth goal in the 73rd minute from another slick counter-attack. Nineteen-year-old substitute Senny Mayulu completed the rout in the 87th minute, assisted by Bradley Barcola, making Inter's defeat the worst in Champions League final history. Gianluigi Donnarumma in PSG's goal remained largely untroubled, as Inter struggled to create clear-cut chances against PSG's high-intensity pressing and fluid attacking style. Ousmane Dembele was also singled out for a tireless performance.
This historic win was the result of a strategic shift by PSG, moving away from the 'bling bling' era of superstars like Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi, towards building a younger, more cohesive team. Club president Nasser al-Khelaifi praised the new direction, stating, "We are building the team for the future." PSG's journey to the final saw them overcome Premier League giants Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal in the knockout stages, showcasing their incremental improvement throughout the tournament.
For Inter Milan, the crushing defeat highlighted potential issues. Fielding the third oldest starting XI in Champions League final history (average age 30 years and 242 days, compared to PSG's average which was five years and 146 days younger), seven of whom started the 2023 final loss to Manchester City, the Nerazzurri appeared fatigued and outmatched by PSG's youth and energy. The loss, which meant Inter ended the season without silverware despite winning their final Serie A game (Napoli took the title), has led to speculation about a necessary rebuild with younger players, though on a tighter budget than PSG. Inter President Giuseppe Marotta had previously expressed a desire for investments in younger profiles. Coach Simone Inzaghi, whose future at the club is uncertain amidst links to Al-Hilal, acknowledged his team's tiredness and PSG's superiority but refrained from commenting on his future.
The Champions League campaign also featured a new expanded 36-team format, with each side playing eight different teams in a league phase. PSG themselves finished 15th in this initial phase, needing to progress via a play-off before navigating the traditional knockout stages. Some observers, like former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha and journalist Nicky Bandini, praised the new format for its excitement and for allowing teams like PSG to develop and find form throughout the season.
Following the triumph, Luis Enrique declared, "We are going to continue to conquer the footballing world," laying down a marker for PSG's ambitions. With a squad brimming with young talent like Doue, Joao Neves (20), and players under 25 such as Kvaratskhelia, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Willian Pacho, PSG appears primed not just to have arrived on the biggest stage, but to stay and potentially dominate European football for years to come. As Nasser Al-Khelaifi stated, "The real work starts today." This PSG team, forged by Enrique into a fearless, fluid, and fast-paced unit, has set a new standard.
