Fishing is one of the most hazardous occupations worldwide, with ensuring safe and fair working conditions remaining a significant challenge for the sector. Human and labour rights abuses continue to occur across fisheries and aquaculture value chains—particularly in fishing, farming, and processing—impacting both developed and developing countries. These issues often disproportionately affect vulnerable groups, including migrant workers and women, creating pressing social implications.

To tackle these challenges, the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), through its Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (CIHEAM Zaragoza), is organising an international training course in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the Social Marine Institute (ISM), through the Isla Cristina National Training Centre (CNF). The Spanish National Institute for Safety and Health at Work (INSST) is also supporting this initiative. The main working language of the course will be English.

This course, delivered by highly qualified experts from international organisations, private entities, and public administrations, will provide participants with the knowledge and tools to develop mechanisms that improve working conditions in fisheries and aquaculture. Attendees will learn how to advance these mechanisms from international frameworks to national applications while empowering fishers and fish labourers to advocate for their rights.

More information about the course and registration can be found on the event website.

Join the effort to create safer, fairer, and more sustainable practices in fisheries and aquaculture!
