Prince William's Heartbreaking Confession: Kids' 'Difficult Questions' on Kate's Cancer Battle

Prince William has openly discussed the challenges of his wife Kate Middleton's cancer battle and the difficulties they face as parents during her ill health. In a candid interview with Brazilian TV host Luciano Huck, the Prince of Wales shared that he and Kate have confronted "difficult questions" from their three children, George, 12, Charlotte, 10, and Louis, seven.
William revealed their decision to be completely transparent with their children regarding their mother's and grandfather King Charles' health struggles. "Every family goes through difficult times and faces challenges together. How you deal with those moments makes all the difference," he stated. He elaborated on their approach: "We decided to tell our children everything, both the good news and the bad. We explain to them why certain things happen and why they might feel upset. Many questions might come up without answers - I think all parents go through that. There's no rulebook for being a parent, and we chose to talk about everything."
Offering a glimpse into their family life at home, William described how he and Kate prioritize being present for their children. He mentioned sharing school runs, with Kate handling "the bulk of it," and his involvement in "play dates, taxi driver, sports days, matches, playing in the garden when I can." The 43-year-old also touched upon their cautious stance on technology, confirming that none of their children currently possess mobile phones. He indicated that George might receive a phone with "limited access" upon entering secondary school, explaining, "We talk to him and explain why we don't think it's right. With full access, children end up seeing things on the internet that they shouldn't. But with restricted access, I think it's good for messaging."
During the interview, filmed in Rio de Janeiro, Luciano Huck presented William with a poignant photograph of his late mother, Princess Diana, from her 1991 visit to São Paulo. The image depicted Diana holding a youngster with HIV, a powerful gesture that helped dismantle taboos surrounding the illness at the time. Huck praised Diana, noting she "became a very important figure in the fight against prejudice," to which William affirmed, "I carry her social and humanitarian legacy with me every day."
William's visit to Brazil was for his environmental initiative, The Earthshot Prize, and he is also set to represent King Charles at the COP30 climate summit in Belém, commencing November 10. He commended Brazil's crucial role in global environmental protection, stating, "You have the Amazon, the care for the climate and for nature. Brazil occupies a leadership position in everything I believe in."
In a landmark address at the World Leaders Summit, William passionately spoke about his commitment to advancing his father's work on global warming. He emphasized the urgency of the situation: "We come together today here in the heart of the Amazon … at a pivotal moment in human history. A moment that demands courage, cooperation and unwavering commitment to our planet's future. A future that belongs not to us, but to our children and grandchildren." He warned of critical tipping points: "All of us here today understand that we are edging dangerously close to the earth's critical tipping points…thresholds beyond which the natural systems we depend on may begin to unravel. The melting of polar ice, the loss of the Amazon, the disruption of ocean currents… these are not distant threats. They are fast-approaching and will affect every one of us, no matter where we live."
Amidst a challenging week, William notably declined to address questions from veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour regarding his disgraced uncle Andrew and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle during a 'fireside' chat with CNN. When Ms. Amanpour referenced his recent Apple TV interview and inquired about family changes, the future King deliberately redirected the conversation to focus on Earthshot. He highlighted his preference to "surround myself with people who want to make change and do good in the world," asserting that "Change will come from backing them not by what I do."
