Presidential Salute: Rassie Erasmus Set to Receive South Africa's Highest National Honour

Rassie Erasmus, the acclaimed Springboks coach, is set to receive the prestigious National Order, one of South Africa's highest accolades, in recognition of his significant contributions to both sporting excellence and national unity. This distinguished award will be presented by President Cyril Ramaphosa during a ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, 19 May 2026, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The announcement of the recipients of the National Order was made by the office of the Presidency on Thursday, 14 May, with Chancellor of the National Orders, Phindile Baleni, confirming Erasmus's inclusion. The National Order is bestowed upon individuals who have made profound contributions towards building a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic, and prosperous South Africa, aligning with the country's constitutional vision. In Erasmus's case, his achievements are celebrated for having "advanced social cohesion among South Africans and raised the nation’s esteem in the international community".

Erasmus's recognition extends beyond his remarkable rugby acumen, which propelled the Springboks to back-to-back Rugby World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023. He is also being honored for his pivotal role in redefining the Springbok brand and culture, fostering social cohesion through the sport, and consistently maintaining sporting excellence. This honour coincides with a period of sustained dominance for South African rugby, underscoring the deep impact of his leadership.

This upcoming accolade adds to a growing list of recognitions for the 53-year-old coach. Last year, Erasmus received a Goodwill Award from the FW De Klerk Foundation, specifically for his "passion, devotion, and brilliance in leading the Springboks to World Cup glory in 2019 and 2023". The foundation highlighted his inspirational role, stating that his coaching "inspires people from all walks of life, instils pride and promotes nation-building". Furthermore, he received an honorary doctorate from the North-West University in the field of Coaching Science, an honor he also received either last year or two years prior, as indicated by separate reports.

The National Order itself is rich in symbolism and is awarded in three categories: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Its design elements include the Lydenburg Heads, representing the arts and creative expression; the African drum, symbolizing communication, cultural celebration, and excellent talent; and a crest/sun, denoting power, glory, illumination, vitality, and the achievements of performers. Inner ovals or borders within the design signify the glorification of sport and the acknowledgement of exceptional achievements in various activities. Additionally, roads are depicted to portray all roads leading to Africa and the Cradle of Humankind, emphasizing the arduous yet rewarding journey towards achievement, excellence, and success.
