Presidency Reacts as Minister's Sister and Twin Sons Rescued Amidst Oyo Abduction Crisis

Presidential aide Dada Olusegun has actively countered claims suggesting that President Bola Tinubu is evading responsibility for the recent abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State or shifting blame to Governor Seyi Makinde. Olusegun emphasized that, in stark contrast to the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, the current government under President Tinubu has taken full and unequivocal responsibility for the ongoing crisis. This assertion came in response to an X user who resurfaced an old tweet by Tinubu from the Jonathan era, in which he had stated that the ultimate responsibility for governance and national security rests with the president. Citing the Chibok school kidnappings that occurred during Jonathan's tenure, the user accused the current administration of attempting to gaslight the state by holding Governor Makinde accountable for the Oyo abduction. Dada Olusegun firmly rejected this, stating that, unlike former President Jonathan, President Tinubu has never denied the occurrence of the abduction.

Amidst the public discourse, the Presidency, through Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, robustly rejected attempts to draw parallels between the recent successful rescue of relatives of former Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu and the ongoing abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Ogbomoso. Ajayi clarified that these two incidents represent fundamentally distinct security challenges, asserting that critics comparing them are overlooking the differing nature of the crimes and the operational realities involved in their resolution. He categorically stated on his Facebook page that it was incorrect to equate the kidnapping of Adelabu's sister and her twin sons with the mass abduction of schoolchildren and teachers by armed terrorists. According to Ajayi, the Adelabu family's kidnapping was perpetrated by an urban criminal gang involved in copycat abductions primarily for financial gain, with victims hidden within the community. In contrast, the Ogbomoso incident involves terrorists operating from remote forest locations, highlighting different motivations and agendas between the two sets of criminals.

Further elaborating on the Adelabu incident, it was confirmed that Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, sister of Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, were abducted on June 3rd along Challenge Road in Ibadan while en route to school. They endured three nights in captivity. Police authorities, confirming their rescue, released a statement detailing how surveillance, intelligence gathering, and tactical operations led to their retrieval on June 6th at 7:30 PM, precisely 84 hours after their abduction. During the intense rescue operation, two suspected kidnappers sustained fatal wounds, and two rifles were recovered, with the victims emerging unharmed. The successful operation subsequently generated significant public debate on social media, with some users questioning why security agencies seemed capable of swiftly securing the release of high-profile individuals' relatives while dozens of Ogbomoso schoolchildren and teachers remained captive.

Responding to these concerns, Ajayi firmly rejected any claims that security agencies were prioritising victims based on social status or political connections. He reiterated the government's commitment, stating, "The Ogbomoso children and their teachers will be rescued, and government/security agencies are not selective as falsely claimed. The approach to the two incidents can't be the same." Ajayi urged Nigerians to celebrate the successful rescue of Adelabu's relatives while continuing to offer prayers for the safe return of all other kidnapping victims across the nation. The Ogbomoso abduction occurred when armed men attacked a school and whisked away pupils and staff, prompting security agencies to launch search-and-rescue operations that are still ongoing to secure their freedom.
