Music icon Madonna is slated to open the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), marking her highly anticipated return to the stage for a live performance at the show since 2003. Her last VMA opening performance in 2003 was a memorable collaboration with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Missy Elliott, famously featuring a kiss with Spears that captivated global attention.

This year's appearance will be particularly significant as it marks the fifth time Madonna has opened the VMAs, an achievement that allows her to surpass Rihanna and hold the record for the artist who has opened the most VMA telecasts. Her previous VMA opening performances include "Express Yourself" in 1989, a gender-bending rendition of "Bye Bye Baby" in 1993, and a powerful medley of "Shanti/Astangi" and "Ray of Light" with Lenny Kravitz in 1998.

The 2026 VMAs, hosted by Snoop Dogg, will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. ET/4:30-6:30 p.m. PT. Viewers can catch the broadcast on CBS, MTV, and stream it on Paramount+ (Premium) in the U.S. The show will also be accessible globally the following day on Paramount+ and MTV. In an innovative partnership, Spotify will serve as the official audio streaming partner for Madonna's performance, aiming to extend the event's reach beyond the live broadcast by connecting fans directly with her music post-performance and offering exclusive content, including archival VMA footage.

Madonna leads this year's VMA nominations with a career-high 11 nods, including prestigious categories such as Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year. This marks the third occasion Madonna has topped the VMA nominations, previously achieving this in 1990 with nine nominations for "Vogue" and again in 1998 with nine nominations for "Ray of Light" and "Frozen."

Her legacy at the VMAs dates back to the very first show in 1984, where her audacious performance of "Like a Virgin" became a groundbreaking pop-culture moment. Just two years later, she made history as the first woman to receive the Video Vanguard Award. Throughout her illustrious career, Madonna has accumulated 19 VMA Awards in competitive categories, solidifying her status as a VMA legend.

The VMAs' timing is also notable, airing just two weeks before the first-round voting period for the 68th annual Grammy Awards, which runs from October 12 to 22. Madonna is poised for a potentially significant night at the Grammys, with her album "Confessions II" expected to be nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album, a category where its predecessor, "Confessions on a Dance Floor," won in 2007. "Confessions II" is also considered a long-shot contender for an Album of the Year nomination; her only prior nomination in this category was for 1998's "Ray of Light." Furthermore, "Confessions II" became Madonna's 10th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 in July, placing her behind only Taylor Swift (15) and Barbra Streisand (11) among female artists with the most No. 1 albums.
