Political Turmoil in Kenya: ODM Faces Defections After Secretary-General Sifuna’s Ouster

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is navigating a period of intense internal turmoil following the contentious ouster of Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna.

The move has drawn widespread criticism and raised fears of fragmentation within the party, with President William Rutoalleged to have played a central role in the upheaval.

Prominent ODM figures, including party leader Oburu Oginga and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, were seen with Ruto at the Genowa Governor’s Cup at Raila Odinga Stadium on December 28, 2025.

This public appearance predated the escalating tensions, which culminated in Sifuna’s abrupt removal, signaling a growing internal rift within the party.

On February 12, 2026, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino held a press conference accusing Ruto of actively attempting to destabilize the ODM party and orchestrate Sifuna’s removal from the powerful secretary-general role.

Their statements intensified scrutiny of the alleged political interference and amplified concerns about the party’s cohesion.

The fallout has sparked protests in Mombasa on the same day, led by ODM life member John Gichana alongside youth groups, who demonstrated against Sifuna’s ouster.

Political analysts warn that if the wave of defections continues, ODM could be reduced to a shadow of its former self, facing a major challenge to its unity and political influence.
