Political Firestorm: NPP's Abronye DC Remanded, Sparks Outcry and Accusations of Selective Justice

The Accra Circuit Court has remanded Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), into prison custody after his arraignment on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace and publication of false news. The Ghana Police Service is the complainant in the case, which has drawn significant public attention and sparked controversy within Ghana’s political landscape. Abronye is scheduled to reappear in court on September 19.
Abronye was initially arrested last week, with the Ghana Police Service confirming his detention on Monday, September 8, 2025, ahead of his court appearance. He first appeared before the Accra Circuit Court on Friday, September 12, 2025, where he was remanded for one week. His court appearances were marked by heavy security, with Abronye brought in a 'Black Maria' and at times in handcuffs, a treatment criticised by his party members as excessive for a misdemeanour. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about the police's decision to detain Abronye in the custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) despite the NIB not being involved in his investigation. Afenyo-Markin queried the motive behind this, suggesting it might be an attempt to punish Abronye, while noting that NIB checks confirmed they were merely holding him at the police's request.
The arrest and subsequent prosecution have ignited strong reactions from NPP supporters and leadership. Outside the courthouse, visibly agitated supporters hurled invectives at police officers, hooted, and chanted slogans, accusing them of harassment and selective justice. Many demanded the police address the security crisis in Bawku instead of pursuing Abronye. Loyalists have consistently maintained that the case is politically motivated.
The Bono Regional Council of Elders of the NPP issued a strong condemnation, describing the arrest and prosecution as a
