Political Firestorm Erupts Over Baffour Awuah's EOCO Detention
Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah is currently detained by EOCO over an investigation into SIC Life Savings and Loans transactions, prompting strong reactions from political figures. NPP aspirant John Boadu made controversial comments, while the MP's lawyer and Minority Leader call for his release, raising concerns about his treatment and the agency's investigative powers.
Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has been the subject of significant public and political attention following his detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The legislator voluntarily reported to the agency on Thursday, October 1, responding to an Accra High Court warrant for his arrest, in connection with an ongoing investigation into financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans.
The detention has sparked strong reactions from various political figures. NPP National Chairman aspirant, John Boadu, made a striking and controversial comment upon arriving at the EOCO office, stating, "I don't think he'll die there. Even if he dies there, that's okay for us because…", leaving the sentence unfinished. This remark was made as the MP’s lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, indicated that his client might spend the night at EOCO due to continued questioning.
Samuel Atta Akyea, the MP's lawyer, has vehemently criticized his client's continued detention and the manner of his treatment. Expressing frustration after visiting the EOCO premises, Mr. Atta Akyea questioned the necessity of the detention, especially since Baffour Awuah had voluntarily presented himself for the investigation. He remarked, "The power play is disgusting. If my client, who is a Member of Parliament, is treated this way, then who is safe?" The lawyer highlighted that EOCO had previously sought a court warrant after claiming to have exhausted reasonable means to secure the MP’s voluntary attendance, despite the MP having referred earlier invitations to the Clerk of Parliament.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has also called for the immediate release of Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah. While stressing that the Minority caucus does not intend to interfere with the investigation, asserting "No one is above the law, EOCO included," he raised concerns about the MP's treatment. Afenyo-Markin claimed that EOCO did not recognize the correspondence sent by the MP through the Clerk of Parliament regarding previous invitations.
Other political figures have also visited the EOCO premises. Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh expressed disappointment after being denied access to his colleague. Leaving the premises, he commented, “I didn’t expect this under President Mahama,” underscoring the political dimension of the situation. The development has triggered visits by several members of the opposition caucus and other NPP figures seeking clarity on the circumstances of the MP’s custody.
The controversy surrounding Baffour Awuah’s detention extends beyond the specifics of the SIC Life Savings and Loans investigation, evolving into a wider debate concerning the exercise of investigative powers by state agencies and the detention of suspects during ongoing probes. As investigators continue their work, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah remains in EOCO custody, with his legal team maintaining his cooperation, while EOCO has not yet publicly indicated a release date.
