Political Earthquake: PDP Govs' Forum Chairman Bala Mohammed Defects to APC

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, is poised to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, marking a significant shift in his political career. This move follows exclusive reports and recent meetings between Mohammed, President Bola Tinubu, and the APC leadership, where his prospective membership was solidified through weeks of discussions. The ruling APC has reportedly conceded a 60/40 power-sharing formula and a Senate ticket to Mohammed as part of the agreement.
However, a contentious issue remains: whether Bala Mohammed will be allowed to nominate his successor. Sources indicate that President Tinubu has insisted on entrusting the APC structure in Bauchi State to the party leadership, rather than an individual. This stance is attributed to the political sensitivity of Bauchi, a state that borders many power centers and tendencies, with prominent figures such as Minister of Health Ali Pate, Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, and oil and gas professional Bala Wunti—all from the state—also reportedly eyeing the governorship.
Further insights reveal that Mohammed's planned defection may also be linked to the legal challenges faced by his Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, who is embroiled in terrorism and N4.6 billion money laundering charges and allegedly threatened to implicate the governor if not released. The ruling party is said to have imposed stringent conditions on Mohammed, differing from those extended to earlier defecting governors. Additionally, Mohammed was allegedly mandated to apologize to Seyi Tinubu, the President's son, for an incident last year where Mohammed's son, Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, publicly criticized Seyi for distributing palliatives in Bauchi during Ramadan, advocating instead for sustainable empowerment initiatives. Mohammed has reportedly tendered this apology.
Despite the concession of the 60/40 power/structure sharing ratio, Mohammed continues to insist on the privilege of nominating his successor, arguing that similar courtesies were extended to others. Uncomfortable with the unresolved succession issue, he has appealed to the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, to intercede with the President for a 60/40 structure-sharing arrangement in the state. In anticipation of a favorable outcome, Mohammed has convened a stakeholders' meeting in Bauchi. This development has caused considerable disappointment within Governor Seyi Makinde’s camp in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who view Mohammed’s last-minute decision as a betrayal of efforts to reconcile and secure the PDP's future.
By joining the APC, Bala Mohammed would elevate the number of governors within the ruling party to 32, leaving the opposition PDP, Labour Party (LP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Accord Party with one governor each. Currently, Governor Seyi Makinde holds the solitary PDP governorship, Alex Otti represents LP, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo is with APGA, and Ademola Adeleke with the Accord Party.
Meanwhile, the PDP is grappling with its own internal divisions, with proposed reconciliation talks underway between the Tanimu Turaki-led faction and the camp loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The Wike group has articulated two non-negotiable conditions for these expected talks. Similar to the Turaki-led PDP's insistence on contesting all positions in the 2027 general election and preserving the party, the Wike group emphasizes that the March 29 national convention must proceed as scheduled.
According to Haruna Mohammed, the National Publicity Secretary of the Wike-loyal National Caretaker Committee, their non-negotiable terms include the unwavering commitment to the March 29 national convention, with ongoing congresses in local government areas and states. Furthermore, the Wike group opposes the establishment of any new national Caretaker Committee, asserting that one is already in place. Each group is expected to present their written conditions, with ten members representing each faction at the meeting, to prevent misinterpretation.
Senator Samuel Anyanwu commented on the reconciliation efforts, acknowledging ongoing meetings to soften grounds for a swift resolution of the PDP crisis, but confirming that no truce has been reached yet. Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, a PDP chieftain, dismissed the perceived severity of the party’s current challenges, affirming its robust status as an opposition platform. Pearse, who served on Atiku Abubakar's 2023 Presidential Campaign Committee, believes the party remains relevant despite internal disputes, highlighting that the PDP continues to be the biggest threat to the ruling party, making its troubles numerous but not indicative of its demise.
In a call for unity, Sule Lamido, a founding member of the PDP, urged party stakeholders to support the caretaker leadership structure associated with Nyesom Wike. During a Ramadan Iftar with PDP leaders in Bamaina, Jigawa State, Lamido stressed the critical need for reconciliation and collective responsibility to stabilize the party. He emphasized that the PDP must prioritize unity and political survival over internal rivalries that could diminish its relevance in Nigeria's political landscape.
Lamido characterized Wike as a strategically astute politician who swiftly established the caretaker committee out of necessity after the expiration of the party's National Working Committee's tenure, thereby filling a leadership vacuum that threatened to paralyze the party. While acknowledging that some may disagree with Wike politically, Lamido argued that this should not hinder engagement in the spirit of unity and brotherhood, asserting that the immediate task is reconciliation and rebuilding the party.
