Political Earthquake: NPP Elects New Regional Leadership, Shifts Power Dynamics Across Ghana!

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has successfully concluded its regional executive elections across various parts of Ghana, marking a crucial step in its strategic preparations and reorganisation efforts for the upcoming 2028 general elections. These elections saw a blend of incumbent leaders retaining their mandates and new executives stepping into leadership roles, reflecting the diverse preferences of party delegates and a renewed focus on strengthening grassroots structures.

In the Ashanti Region, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah secured a resounding victory for the chairmanship, polling 663 votes against his closest contender, Henry Kwabena Kokofu, who received 269 votes. This marked Appiah’s third attempt at the position, achieving a decisive win despite expectations of a close contest. In his acceptance speech, Appiah emphasized the importance of party unity and urged for a restrained celebration as the party embarks on its reorganisation phase in the region. Ten other executives were also elected to serve alongside him, with the Elections Committee commending the peaceful conduct of the process.

The Northern Regional NPP elections, held on Saturday, August 15, recorded a high turnout with 397 out of 410 delegates casting their ballots. Incumbent Chairman Mohammed Baatima Adam, known as Samba, successfully retained his position with 215 votes, fending off challengers Inusah Amad (122 votes), Fuseini Musah (44 votes), and Salifu A. Rahman Mumin (5 votes). While continuity was ensured at the top, delegates opted for change in several other executive roles. Ayamba Yelimagli was elected First Vice Chairman with 270 votes, while Abdul Rahman Mahama became Second Vice Chairman unopposed. Dr Abdul Rahman Karim Kpala secured the Secretary position with a significant margin, winning 324 votes. Bediako Jeremiah led the Deputy Secretary race with 176 votes. The Treasurer contest was notably close, with Husseini Abubakari Saddiq narrowly defeating Mohammed Yussif Toyibu by a single vote (175 to 174). Hajia Suraiya Manan became the new Women’s Organiser with 153 votes, and Ibrahim Abdul Aziz won as Youth Organiser. Salifu Abdul Rashid and Sayibu Yussif Danjumah were elected unopposed as Organiser and Communication Officer respectively, while Mohammed Ibrahim won the Nasara Organiser position. The newly elected executives are tasked with leading regional structures and grassroots mobilisation for their four-year term.

In the Western Region, former Amenfi West parliamentary candidate Ignatius Kwesi Afrifa emerged as Chairman, polling 265 votes to defeat Abdul Ganiyu Mohammed (102 votes). The election, held in Agona-Nkwanta, also saw Ignatius Aaaah Mensah elected First Vice Chairman, Francis Abeku Yankah as Second Vice Chairman, Kwasi Bonzoh as Secretary, and Lawrence Takyi as Deputy Secretary. Amoabeng Acheampong became Organiser, Emmanuel Acquah Mensah Communications Director, Osagyefo Attiah Kwaw Youth Organiser, Augustina Nketiah Women’s Organiser, Nana Adwoa Appiah Treasurer, and Adam Harun Ahmed Nasara Organiser. These executives are expected to spearhead the party’s reorganisation and preparations for the 2028 elections.

The Greater Accra Region elected Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, former Minister for Health, as its Chairman. Dr Okoe Boye secured a decisive victory with 490 votes, defeating Alfred Boye who polled 172 votes. Campaigning on a promise of inclusive and service-oriented leadership, Dr Okoe Boye emphasized placing constituency executives at the center of decision-making. Madam Joan was elected First Vice Chairperson, and Prince Obeng won the Second Vice Chairman position. Their mandate includes leading the reorganisation and mobilisation efforts to strengthen the party’s electoral fortunes for 2028.

In the Volta Region, incumbent Makafui Kofi Woanyah secured another term as NPP Regional Chairman, winning by a narrow margin of 21 votes. He polled 169 votes against Joseph Wallace Homenya’s 148. Woanyah’s supporters highlighted his contributions to the party’s development, while his opponents advocated for a change in leadership to foster unity and improve the party’s appeal. Woanyah will continue to oversee the NPP’s affairs and reorganisation in the region.

The Central Region saw Joseph Kobinah Esibu elected Chairman with 278 votes, defeating Percy Dennis (161 votes). Kojo Halm became First Vice Chairman with 271 votes, and Meshack Kweku Amoafo won Second Vice Chairman with 220 votes. Takyi Mensah was elected Secretary, Anthony Sackey Organiser, Charles Odoom Deputy Secretary, and Francis Asare Treasurer. Odeneho Kwakye Appiah emerged as Youth Organiser, Agyeman Asiedu Communications Director, Charlotte Adwo Antwi Women’s Organiser, and King Dgagada Nasara Organiser. The new executives are tasked with strengthening grassroots structures ahead of 2028.
