Not long ago, Catherine Wanjiru alias Sharon Cate, 40 had a deep conversation with her sister Ann Wambui in Nairobi's Kayole Junction.

Among her plans was that they set aside some funds to establish a business to cushion their lives.

Unknown to her, this was the last wish that would never come to pass; Wanjiru was stabbed to death on the night of May 9, 2025.

Police are investigating her boyfriend, 31-year-old Samuel Mathenge.

Police and family have described her death as a gruesome murder, citing that the suspect committed the act in a short time and without catching the attention of the neighbours.

On the fateful evening, it is reported that Mathenge had visited Wanjiru at her house within Kayole Junction along Kangundo Road.

At the time, Wanjiru was in the company of her son, aged 11, who witnessed what unfolded between the two.

However, what remains a mystery is what transpired between the two before Wanjiru's body was discovered with stab wounds in her house.

"What we have gathered is that an argument ensued between the two, and at one point,he slapped her several times," narrated Ann Wambui, the deceased sister

"This forced her to send the boy to alert the security guard on the ground floor to tell him that all was not well in the house," she added.

Unfortunately, the boy found the guard assisting someone to park a vehicle so he could report to him what was happening at their home.

"He returned to the house only to find it locked from inside with padlock. Again he went back to the guard and reported the matter," she explained

Wanjiru says that at this point, the security guard called Wanjiru's number but it was Mathenge who picked but did not report that there was any problem.

Minutes later, it is reported that Mathenge was seen leaving the compound with Maasia shuka on his head as if to conceal his identity.

And when the security guard called him, he reportedly fled away towards Kangundo road around 10pm.

In the house, he is said to have left behind a mobile phone and a copy of his identity card, an indication that he was a frequent visitor.

"I was among the first to step into the house after police, and what I saw was horrific. Wanjiru lay dead with several stabs on the head, neck and arms," said Wambui

Adding that," the painful part is the son was also present and saw the mother in that state, he never knew what had happened due to his innocence."

Kayole Sub-County Commander John  Awouth, who confirmed the incident,t said that the case was still under probe by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

According to the family, Wanjiru and Mathenge had dated for only two years, even though it was not clear if they had plans, but insisted that they were in love.

By the time they met, Wanjiru had been blessed with two children, aged 22 and 11, who are now in grade 7.

The deceased's younger sister Sarah Wambui described her as a peaceful person in the family.

"What we are appealing is that the suspect be brought to book as soon as possible because her death is a big blow to the family and her children," she said

The deceased's body was moved to Mama Lucy Kibaki morgue awaiting postmortem on Thursday.
