Police intercept lorry carrying illegal ethanol in Webuye

Police in Webuye Town, Bungoma County, have intercepted a lorry believed to be transporting illegal ethanol, as part of an ongoing crackdown on illicit alcohol trade.
The lorry seized during a multi-agency operation, was found carrying 35 containers, each holding 250 litres of a clear liquid.
The substance had been concealed under cartons of milk in what authorities say was a deliberate attempt to evade detection.
National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) CEO Anthony Omerikwa, who spoke at the scene, said the operation was a warning to those involved in the illicit alcohol trade.
“This was not just an attempt to break the law; it was an intentional move to endanger lives. We will not relent in pursuing those involved in the manufacture, trafficking and sale of illegal uncustomized substances,” said Omerikwa.
He added, “Their assets will be traced and seized under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering framework.”
Samples of the seized liquid have been sent to the Government Chemist for analysis. Preliminary investigations indicate it may have been intended for the production of illicit alcohol.
Omerikwa praised the cooperation between local police and the Kenya Revenue Authority, emphasising the role of collaboration in tackling illegal trade.
“More seizures and apprehensions are possible if we break silos and pool our efforts. The networks fuelling this trade thrive on communication gaps. We must close them,” he said.
He also urged the public to join the fight by reporting suspicious activity through NACADA’s toll-free hotline, 1192.
“Community support is crucial. Let us protect our youth and safeguard the future,” he said.
