PM Modi Embarks on Extensive 5-Nation Diplomatic Tour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a landmark five-nation diplomatic tour from July 2 to July 9, encompassing visits to Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. This extensive eight-day itinerary marks the Prime Minister's longest diplomatic journey in nearly a decade, signifying India's deep commitment to enhancing its engagement with the Global South and forging stronger partnerships across both the Atlantic and multilateral platforms such as BRICS, the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The first stop on the tour is Ghana, where PM Modi arrived on July 2 for a visit scheduled until July 3. Hosted by President John Dramani Mahama, the discussions are set to focus on bolstering cooperation in vital sectors including investment, energy, health, security, and development. PM Modi highlighted Ghana's significance as a valued partner in the Global South and its crucial role within the African Union and ECOWAS. A notable gesture during this visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly three decades, will be PM Modi's address to the Parliament of Ghana, underscoring the shared democratic values between the two nations.

Following Ghana, the Prime Minister will travel to Trinidad & Tobago from July 3 to July 4. This Caribbean nation holds special significance due to its deep-rooted historical, cultural, and people-to-people connections with India, especially as it marks 180 years since the arrival of the first Indians. PM Modi is scheduled to meet President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. This visit, the first by an Indian leader in 27 years, aims to rejuvenate the special bonds of ancestry and kinship uniting the two countries.

Next, PM Modi will head to Buenos Aires, Argentina, for a significant bilateral visit – the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. Argentina is recognized as a key economic partner in Latin America and a close collaborator within the G20. The agenda includes deepening collaboration in crucial areas such as agriculture, energy, trade, technology, and critical minerals. PM Modi is set to meet President Javier Milei, with whom he previously held discussions last year.

The Brazil leg of the tour, from July 6 to July 7, is particularly vital as it includes PM Modi's participation in the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, followed by a bilateral state visit to Brasília. India reaffirms its commitment to BRICS as a crucial platform for cooperation among emerging economies, striving collectively for a more peaceful, equitable, just, democratic, and balanced multipolar world order. His visit to Brasília, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly six decades, will involve talks with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, focusing on shared priorities of the Global South.

The tour will conclude in Namibia, where PM Modi will meet President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Emphasizing the common history of struggle against colonialism that binds India and Namibia, PM Modi expressed the privilege of addressing the Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament. This session will serve as a platform to celebrate their enduring solidarity and shared commitment to freedom and development. This marks the first prime ministerial visit to Namibia in 27 years. Overall, this comprehensive five-nation tour is seen as a significant diplomatic push to reaffirm India's leadership role in the Global South and to expand its strategic outreach across both Africa and Latin America.
