President Bola Tinubu's administration is employing a multi-faceted approach to restore enduring peace and foster intercommunal harmony in Plateau State, a region long plagued by bloodshed and violent crises. This comprehensive strategy involves high-level diplomatic engagement, decisive security operations, and a robust political commitment to stability, all aimed at addressing the root causes of conflict and enhancing the security situation on the Plateau, which has been declared a top priority at the highest level of government.

Central to these peace efforts is the deployment of Dr. Abiodun Essiet, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement for the North-central zone, as a peace emissary to Plateau State. Essiet spent two days engaging with key stakeholders, including Christian clerics and Fulani Miyetti Allah community leaders. Her engagements culminated in a town hall meeting in Jos, the state capital, where delegates from various local government areas, traditional rulers, women, and youth leaders converged to discuss strengthening community-based peace structures and promoting coexistence.

Dr. Essiet paid a courtesy visit to Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, Chairman of the Regional Church Council (RCC) and Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Barkin Ladi, where the role of faith-based leadership in peace, unity, and social development was discussed. Alongside Dachomo, she also addressed widows, conveying President Tinubu’s message of fostering ethnic reconciliation. Rev. Dachomo, known as a vocal advocate for Christian communities and outspoken about alleged Christian persecution in the North-central, had previously threatened to report Nigeria to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Essiet also met with Fulani leaders in Barkin Ladi to foster dialogue and mutual understanding between pastoral and farming communities, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive engagement. A workshop was conducted on establishing a community peace structure across the 17 local government areas, and a closed-door meeting was held with the Irigwe community, the Miyetti Allah group, and representatives from the Youth Council of Bassa LGA, focusing on a 17-member peace committee to strengthen dialogue and reconciliation. These initiatives underscore President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to peace and inclusive governance, with the Community-Based Peace Structure envisioned as a crucial instrument for grassroots unity and long-term stability.

A tangible success of these peace interventions was the swift resolution of a farm conflict between David Toma, an Agha Farm owner in Gyel district, Jos South, and some herdsmen. After Toma seized two cows due to farm destruction, the MACBAN Chairman of Bassa Local Government Area, Alhaji Isah Yau, paid N500,000 in compensation on November 15, 2025, leading to the release of the cows. All parties involved subsequently signed an undertaking to embrace peace in the state.

Simultaneously, the Department of State Services (DSS) has intensified security operations to dismantle networks fueling violence in the region. In a significant breakthrough, the DSS arrested Musa Abubakar, a suspected major arms supplier, on November 12, 2025, in Mista Ali, Bassa Local Government Area. Abubakar was apprehended during active production, surrounded by raw chemicals, tools, and explosive components. He confessed to manufacturing and distributing high-caliber arms and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to criminal networks involved in attacks, banditry, and communal clashes across Plateau and adjoining northern regions. Recovered dangerous components, including explosive chemicals, metal fabrication equipment, detonators, and partially assembled weapons, are now in DSS custody.

This arrest follows months of surveillance and precise intelligence, demonstrating the agency's commitment to combating terrorism. In related operations, the DSS successfully rearrested Abdulazeez Obadaki, an Ansaru terrorist who escaped the July 2022 Kuje Correctional Centre jailbreak. Obadaki, a notorious operative linked to the Islamic State-affiliated Ansaru network, had been on the run for over two years and was responsible for orchestrating multiple deadly attacks across the country, including bank raids in Uromi, Edo State, and a fatal shooting at Deeper Life College in Okene, Kogi State. These operational successes, alongside the arrest of nine other high-profile suspects involved in Plateau and Benue attacks, including Timna Manjol, highlight the DSS's resolute efforts in enhancing national security.

Further demonstrating the federal government's commitment, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, representing President Tinubu at a grand All Progressives Congress (APC) rally at the Jos Polo Field, assured the people of Plateau State that President Tinubu is resolute about ending the years of bloodshed. Akpabio emphasized that lasting peace on the Plateau is now at the center of the President's national security strategy.

The rally, which saw a major political realignment with influential figures defecting from five opposition parties to the APC, served as a platform to underscore the administration's overriding priority: the security of lives and property. Among the notable defectors were Senator Istifanus Gyang, Latep Dabang, Dr. Patrick Dakum, Alfred Dabwam, and three serving members of the House of Representatives. Akpabio described these defections as evidence of APC's growing strength and consolidation in Plateau under the leadership of National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, predicting an APC sweep in the 2027 elections.

This political momentum, combined with presidential support, signals a decisive turning point for stability in a state long battered by violence, with the government assuring its citizens that peace is within reach.
