Pirates' Victory Over Magesi Ignites Title Race, Piling Pressure on Sundowns!

The 2025/26 Betway Premiership season is reaching a thrilling crescendo as Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates engage in a fierce battle for the coveted league title. Recent crucial victories have significantly tightened the race, promising an exciting conclusion to the campaign.
Mamelodi Sundowns initially bolstered their position at the top of the league standings, extending their lead to six points after a dominant 7-4 victory over Siwelele FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. This high-scoring encounter saw a hat-trick from Brayan León, supported by two goals from Tashreeq Matthews and one from Teboho Mokoena, along with an own goal contributed by Nyiko Mobbie. Siwelele FC's resistance was marked by a hat-trick from Ghampani Lungu and a goal by Relebogile Mokhuoane. This win not only secured three vital points for Masandawana but also significantly improved their goal differential. Sundowns are set to play their final league match against TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday, 12 May, at 19:30, before turning their attention to the CAF Champions League.
Orlando Pirates, however, swiftly responded to the pressure, demonstrating their title credentials with a clinical 3-0 away win against Magesi FC at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium. This victory was a follow-up to a vital 2-0 away win over Stellenbosch FC in midweek, showcasing the Buccaneers' strong form. Patrick Maswanganyi opened the scoring for Pirates in the eighth minute, expertly controlling the ball and eliminating defenders before unleashing a shot past the Magesi goalkeeper. Seven minutes later, Kamogelo Sebeleble doubled the lead, placing Orlando Pirates firmly in control. Oswin Appollis then sealed the comprehensive victory in the 60th minute after Sebeleble was brought down.
This crucial win against Magesi FC has narrowed the gap to Mamelodi Sundowns to just three points. More importantly for the Buccaneers, they possess a game in hand over their rivals, making the title destiny potentially within their control. Furthermore, their goal difference has received a significant boost, giving them a six-goal advantage over Sundowns, which could prove decisive if points are tied.
The match against Magesi FC held high stakes for both sides. While Orlando Pirates are chasing league glory, Magesi FC, in only their second top-flight campaign, are battling for survival at the opposite end of the table. Rooted to the bottom with only 21 points from 27 league matches, Dikwena tša Meetse had slipped into last place following a damaging 2-1 home defeat to Orbit College earlier in the week. Despite their struggles, Magesi had shown they can be dangerous on home soil, with all four of their league victories this season coming in Limpopo. However, they faced Pirates without midfielder Motsie Matima, who was suspended after accumulating his fourth booking, though Kgothatso Mariba was expected to return from injury.
Orlando Pirates have been particularly impressive away from home this season, collecting 30 points from 13 road fixtures and losing only once. Their current unbeaten run across all competitions now stands at five matches, reinforcing their credentials as formidable travelers. The Buccaneers still have two more league matches to play after their encounter with Magesi FC, making every fixture a must-win as they aim to end their lengthy wait for league honours.
Historically, meetings between Orlando Pirates and Magesi have produced surprises, including Magesi previously knocking Pirates out of a cup competition. However, the Soweto giants have since asserted their dominance, winning two of the last three encounters, including a 2-0 league victory earlier this season and a 2-1 triumph in the Carling Knockout, a trend they continued with their recent 3-0 win.
