Pirates’ Transfer Frenzy: Club’s Busy Window Signals Major Squad Overhaul

Orlando Pirates have confirmed the signing of Andre De Jong from Stellenbosch, marking a decisive move early in the transfer window. The 29-year-old New Zealander, known for his tactical intelligence and work ethic as a number 10, arrives to bolster the Buccaneers’ midfield. While his scoring record—two goals and one assist in 14 Betway Premiership matches this season—may not be prolific, his reliability and consistency on the pitch make him a valuable addition, potentially earning a starting XI spot.
Beyond De Jong, Pirates are targeting other key squad upgrades, particularly a long-term replacement for Mbekezeli Mbokazi. Rumors point to a flurry of potential arrivals and departures that could reshape the team ahead of the new season, reflecting a clear strategy for squad enhancement.
Among the club’s top targets is 21-year-old central defender Khulumani Ndamane from TS Galaxy. Regarded as a classy operator still far from his peak, Ndamane represents a long-term investment for the Pirates’ defensive line. Another prospect, 23-year-old winger Siyanda Ndlovu from Golden Arrows, is prized for his pace and direct attacking style, potentially serving as a key backup if star winger Rele Mofokeng’s anticipated exit comes to pass.
TS Galaxy’s versatile 21-year-old Puso Dithejane is also reportedly on Pirates’ radar. Dithejane has produced four goals and four assists in 12 league starts this season and can operate across the right-hand side or in central midfield, making him an attractive target as the team plans for a potential Mofokeng departure. His versatility is a critical asset amid ongoing squad restructuring and future planning.
For the midfield, Durban City’s 27-year-old Mfanafuthi Mkhize is emerging as a strong candidate to fill Mbokazi’s vacancy. Mkhize has been ever-present for the PSL newcomers, featuring in all 15 league matches and offering a reliable, ready-made solution for Orlando Pirates’ engine room. Additionally, 25-year-old Marumo Gallants striker Daniel Msendani—with three goals and three assists last term—has hinted at a potential move to Pirates, aiming to strengthen their attacking options.
On the departure front, several current players face uncertain futures. Striker Tshegofatso Mabasa, 29, once a top marksman, has fallen behind Evidence Makgopa and Yanela Mbuthuma in the pecking order, registering only five league appearances this season. Fan reactions are mixed, with some advocating his exit while others fear he may revive his form at rivals like Kaizer Chiefs.
Right-back Deano van Rooyen also faces questions over his long-term role. Once a starter in the Carling Knockout semi-final against Richards Bay, van Rooyen has struggled with injuries and is now firmly second-choice behind Thabiso Lebitso. Recent league matches and the Carling Knockout final saw him largely unused, underscoring a period of transition for the Pirates’ squad.
