Pink Floyd Legend Dick Parry Passes Away at 83

Dick Parry, the acclaimed saxophonist known for his indelible contributions to Pink Floyd's most iconic albums, has passed away at the age of 83. The news of his death was shared by his longtime friend and collaborator, David Gilmour, who posted an emotional tribute on social media on Friday, May 22nd. Gilmour, 80, expressed his profound sadness, noting their musical partnership extended back to when he was seventeen years old, playing in various bands together, including Pink Floyd. The cause of Parry's death was not disclosed.
Throughout a distinguished career that encompassed rock, blues, and jazz, Parry was most celebrated for his distinctive saxophone solos featured on Pink Floyd's legendary albums. His work on 1973's "The Dark Side of the Moon" and 1975's "Wish You Were Here" left an enduring mark on music history. Signature tracks like "Money," "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," and "Us and Them" prominently showcase his unique sound and expressive playing. Notably, "Money" achieved significant chart success, reaching No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973, while "The Dark Side of the Moon" topped the Billboard 200 for a week in the same year, and "Wish You Were Here" spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 1975.
In his heartfelt tribute, Gilmour lauded Parry's unmistakable feel and tone, describing his saxophone playing as "a signature of enormous beauty that is known to millions." Born in Kentford, Suffolk, in 1942, Parry's musical journey began early, as he and Gilmour connected as teenagers, performing in local groups around Cambridge. Their paths diverged briefly when Gilmour joined Pink Floyd in the late 1960s after Syd Barrett's departure, but their collaboration continued.
Even after Pink Floyd's major era, Parry remained an active participant in Gilmour's musical endeavors, appearing on his solo albums and tours. This included his memorable performance on "Wearing the Inside Out" from Pink Floyd's 1994 album, "The Division Bell," which was recorded following the split between Gilmour and Roger Waters. Parry also toured with the reconfigured group that year, having previously accompanied them on the road in the mid-1970s. Beyond his work with Pink Floyd and Gilmour, Parry lent his talents to a diverse range of artists, including Rory Gallagher, John Entwistle, and Lightnin’ Slim.
